I’m glad you asked 😂. This gun has been my project for the last eleven months. I bought a baby vaquero in 32 mag years ago and fell in love with the easy handling fixed sight nature of it. So i wanted to have one in a big bore. Enter the 45 colt new vaquero. I’ve got a 7.5” Bisley Blackhawk that is very well tuned and slicked up by a top tier smith, but I decided to do this one as much as I could myself. I had the throats reamed and a black hawk hammer sear tuned up by someone else because I didn’t want to drop a few hundred on the tools to do it. I firelapped the constriction out of the barrel, lengthened the pawl to get timing correct, opened up the forcing cone, and had a custom offset brass sight made to correct the windage. Chad at chigsgrips made the stocks for me. I broke one transfer bar from all the dry firing I did to smooth this thing up, so filed down the step on the hammer to get a solid thump when it drops instead of pinching the transfer bar. This gun handles and feels as good as any I’ve felt. I’m obviously proud of it. 😂. I ended up developing two loads for it. A SWC and the GTbullets hollow point, both around 900 fps and sight filed to hit at 40 yards.
Earlier in the day I still hunted through some really thick cedar and bumped a few close up but could never get a clear shot. The blind on the feeder I shot him at is a rifle blind so I bushed up 45 yards away. I ended up hitting him about two inches higher than I meant to, so caught the spine with that hollow point. Our Texas deer are not much bigger than our jackrabbits. Finished him with the second shot, which is the recovered bullet that can be seen in the first photo right under his chin and the mushroom in the second.
I love handgun hunting. You can usually find me with my S&W 460XVR, but for those time I’m Going to be doing a lot of walking I opt for the Ruger Blackhawk 45LC, some 230gr CorBon’s, and a chest holster. Such a joy to shoot and I can keep it on a raccoon put to 50 yards without a rest.
Here’s a doe my wife took with the 460, maybe 20 yards.

That’s amazing she shoots a 460! I’ve taught most of the women in my life to shoot a .38, and then load their guns up with .357’s for carry 😂
She loves it with the 200 & 275 grains (275’s used on that doe) but she hasn’t tried the 325’s yet, they are peppy.
