For the first time in many years, I saw nothing all day on opening day yesterday. I heard fewer shots than usual, too.

Same here, but it was because I was at home in a nice warm bed, and didn't go!
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

As I've posted earlier the drought till end of August then 2 cloud bursts with excess of 9 inches on 8/22 and 9/1 has turned my place into a jungle with an explosion of natural food. Almost NO deer at feeders with so much natural high protein available!!! Good news we had our first frost yesterday so maybe we'll see a reduction in those preferred natural foods.

This is a disadvantage of hunting a fixed position with the typical Texas feeder/stand combo. You would have to hunt on foot keeping the wind in mind. The deer didn’t just disappear. Figure out their movements and place a portable blind or just hunt the old fashioned way.
To be determined

The number of shots heard during the two-day weekend was far below what I've heard in years past in East Texas. I attribute it to the approaching full moon and more mid-day activity. It was approaching 10am before I saw the first deer Saturday morning. I would guess 75% of hunters had already left their stands by that time.

Wowee that's odd . . . Been hearing the annual opening morning glock field test for a lotta years now

Wowee that's odd . . . Been hearing the annual opening morning glock field test for a lotta years now I did hear a guy miss around 8:30. I first heard one shot, followed quickly by two more. Then about five minutes later a heard a series of five or six practice shots. But you're right, around 10 am is when you often hear guys shooting a gun they probably haven't shot in months if not since last season. And you can't help but chuckle when it happens while you're watching deer.

Went back yesterday evening and saw a forkhorn and a yearling. Nothing shootable. Did see 17 hogs, and shot one of those. One down. At this rate, they'll be gone . . . never.

I didnt see a thing during light hours and my place is full of deer and hogs and even turkey. Game coming to my feeder after midnight till around 5 am. My Spypoint camera sends pics in real time. they just seem to be staying in the woods so hunting along a creek or over a tank in a portable stand will be my next few trips to the field. I am in central Texas, one of the highest populations of feral hogs and not seeing them either.

Saturday was the first sit that I didn't see anything. I had 4 sits during bow season and saw something each time.

Unusually slow in Lee county, I didn’t see anything Saturday morning and hunted through this morning and only saw a young 6 and 8 doe and 4 yearlings. Another guy on the place saw about the same so no mature bucks at all! Lots of acorns falling and plenty of browse so deer are just not hitting the feeders.

This was a very, very slow weekend. Unprecedented really.
The ingrates have no appreciation for the cost of corn. Corn is on the ground morning, noon and night all weekend.

I also heard the fewest shots over the opening weekend that I’ve ever heard. I’ve got a pile of corn under the feeder. Tons of acorns on the ground right now. I decided to hunt the creek bottom acorns and still didn’t see a deer.

Crickets in central Texas as well. Tripped over large piles of fresh acorns trying to refill the feeder..Deer ain’t interested in any of it. Recent rains should rot the acorns and with a cold snap next weekend we may be ready for prime time.

I saw 2 yearlings opening day South of Bowie. Then 2 beautiful 3 year old, heavy bodied, bucks that were barely legal the next day. I decided to let them walk.
However I hunted both days. I heard one shot each day. The deer that generally come to my 12 month feeder 100 yards from the house have become nocturnal prior to season opening. No idea why but there is a lot of natural browse.
I heard only one or two shots each day. I figured they were just not moving.
However, I stopped by a taxidermist just South of me on Hwy 287. He had taken in an awful lot of deer and had quit taking them until he could get some stuff out.
They damn sure didn’t come anybody within hearing distance of my place. I’ve owned the place 38 years and don’t remember an opening weekend that was this quiet.
As usual, no shortage of pigs.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
