How many of you know about this man?

I watched a program about him last night. Quite the character and smart as well. He took and passed the bar with little college and only one year of law school.

He was for wealth redistribution. Quite controversial.

"A mob is coming here in six months to hang the other ninety-five of you damned scoundrels, and I'm undecided whether to stick here with you or go out and lead them."

- Huey Long, Senate floor speech

Shot him dead in the halls of the Capitol.
Quite controversial in last year of governor
Chicken in every pot.
Name the Big NOLA bridge after him

Somebody approached him once with a copy of the Louisiana Constitution. He said "I AM the constitution."

'Heard an interview with a man that was a young member of the house. (Is what they call that chamber in a Napoleonic law state?). Huey came by his desk to make sure he was voting for something. The young man replied that he couldn't in good faith and represent the needs of his constituents. As soon as he got home that night, his mother called to tell him that his father had been laid off at the power plant.

One crooked SOB. Very powerful. Very corrupt. They call LA "the last feudal state in the world."

Man, you opened up a memory. When I was a kid (8 or so), our family would gather at Live Oak Plantation from time to time, for a big Sunday meal. The plantation was near Waterproof, Louisiana and was on the “Texas Road”. Immigrants would cross the Mississippi River by barge in the old days on their way to Texas by wagon. A fellow I called Uncle Elliot had the plantation. He had been a bodyguard for Huey Long, and his name, if you have books on Long, was E.D. Coleman. He loved Huey Long. My grandmother hated Huey Long, so there was always heated discussion about life under Long, though he was dead. Uncle Elliot said something about shooting the assassin, which really got my attention, as you can imagine. I asked him ‘Uncle Elliot, did you shoot that man”, meaning the assassin, whose name I can’t remember. Uncle Elliot said (if memory is correct), “Yes, boy, I shot him 9 times, and if I’d had more bullets, I’d have shot him some more”.

Uncle Elliot, who wasn’t actually an Uncle, was at that time the Parish Sheriff, and had a big gun collection. He let me play with the guns. The German MP38 and the US M3 Grease Gun were my favorites. I did not get any ammo.

Thanks for bringing back that old memory.

A guy I worked with used to be one of Huey Long’s “bird dogs’”. His dad was one of Longs cronies and Huey had access to a lot of land and would put on bird hunts and use kids to retrieve birds.
