Moved to a different part of the lease and have been busy moving blind, feeder and setting up the feed pen and forgot to setup the trailcam.

Finally got the camera setup a few weeks ago and pulled the sim card yesterday. Saw this poor guy a couple of times, any ideas of what he might have or gotten himself into? His head appears swollen or mis-shaped and there appears to be small lumps covering a large part of his body. Been Googling it and haven’t found a match it doesn’t appear to be CWD, blue tongue, deer warts etc.

If you’re referring to his fur, he’s losing his summer coat. It you talking about the crypt keeper look, as the others said he looks like too many birthdays.

I don't think he is that old. To me it looks he ran into something, or something hit him in the face. It gave him that roman nose look. Looks like it messed up his nose and either this bottom lip or jaw.

Well I admit I did not consider his appearance as age related. With so many years of hunting in "if it's brown it's down" areas, I never saw any old deer, so this one threw me! wink

Seriously though, I didn't see the sagging back or belly on this fellow, that one hears about with older mature bucks, so I just assumed it was something else like trauma or disease.

So per "normal" lease rules this guy would not be considered "trophy" as he is not eight points or have a 14" spread (at least from what I can tell from two pictures) but this year are are also allowed a "cull buck" . So if this buck is fully mature/old and still only six pts with no brow tines that I can see, I believe he would be considered a cull (or am I wrong) . In regards to the flavor/quality of the meat, would you folks pass up an old buck like that or shoot him?

Thanks!

I agree. He doesn’t look that old to me, either.

Went through trail cam pics again last night and I found one more pic of him, this is two weeks after the first two pictures. The face looks less swollen (may be the viewing angle) but he definitely tangled with something. Poor bastard.

Almost looks like he stuck his nose in a leg hold trap.

Good points. Maybe his overall appearance is related to poor feeding.

Yup
probably a snare

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

If it was a snare it would probably still be on him.

I'll say it again... this buck has been around for many years.
Look at the sagging brisket, both knees missing fur, loose skin.

A foothold trap in Texas would never cause that kind of injury.
