In case you're in the market for a pre-owned vehicle...

Damaged cars from Hurricane Ian enter market. Here's how to spot a flooded vehicle

There used to be some states where you could wash the title, I don't know if that loophole is still around.

Fraudsters will "wash" the title of flooded vehicles totaled by insurance companies.

"That means they take the VIN number from a similar vehicle that's been junked and attach it to that flooded vehicle," said Sinclair. "And then they can make repairs."

It used to be that you could title it in OK, then transfer back to TX, and the "salvage" designation would disappear. There are more ways to "wash" a title than just replacing the VIN.

I was told by an insurance guy that Arkansas is the main state that allows for a salvaged title to be issued as a clean title. Then they will transfer the title from AR to another state, and it show up as clean or non-salvaged. There was something with how AR did their titles that allowed this.

When I was looking for a vehicle for my son I checked out a small pickup. I pulled the transmission dipstick and it had rust on it. There is only one way I can think of that a dipstick would have rust. Of course I passed.
