Relax. When I was an assistant band director, my boss's wife would crush them in a molcajete with a little tomato and put them on corn chips. 'Course, they were Mexican-American and, I assume, their taste buds were totally fried. They're great, but they're dam hot!

'Course, they were Mexican-American and, I assume, their taste buds were totally fried. They're great, but they're dam hot! Yes Sir, fresh Chile Tepins (a member of the Pequin family, AKA Chile Pequins/Chiltepins/bird pepper) make excellent salsa. I pick them every chance I get and grow them from seed. Always make some fresh salsa in a molcajete when we make tamales. Chilis, tomato, onion, garlic, lime, & salt. Simple & delicious. My Dad got me hooked on those things when I was 6 yrs old. I'd pick them at the deer lease & dry them out in the window sill, then crunch them up over a bowl of my Mom's deer chili. Great memories. I used to trap pigs on a ranch on Chiltepin Creek that was loaded with them, and the owner let me pick all the peppers that I wanted as long as I was killing pigs. I'd fill milk jugs full of peppers, that's a lot of pickin'. I've got some growing here at the house, but my dang chickens terrorize them.

They used to grow in my back yard when I was itty-bitty. 'Guy at work used to dry them in a garbage bag, then put them in a blender with salt (OUTSIDE!) and put the mix in a spice shaker. Deelicious on just about everything.

Deelicious on just about everything. LOL, yep. I've got a spice shaker full in my pantry (no salt though), just crushed like red pepper flakes. I really like to use dried/crushed peppers in my HOT sausage (fresh, smoked, summer, & breakfast). Great flavor with a little heat.

The banks of the Salado Creek in south San Antonio has hundreds of plants growing wild there. We used to pick a few while playing the Republic Golf course, before they closed the course down.

I had some baby turkeys I was raising that got into them on my fence line and it killed them deader than dead. Ok just dead, but not sure if they got stuck in their throats or just burned up their insides.

Man, I wish I could tolerate the hot stuff. I love the actual flavor of many peppers, but my body just cannot tolerate the heat. Gives me immediate and lasting hiccups, etc. Wears me out.

My cousin owns 22 acres just outside of Orange Grove, and has them growing all over the place. He had probably 40 or 50 bushes just on his back fence line, some of those bushes I couldn't reach the tops of. We'd take our kids back there and spend hours picking peppers. He had to rebuild that back fence, and had a guy come in with a big mulcher and killed all of them. I almost cried.

Probably. I plan to have one of our resident experts get a few plants going for the spring.
