Hello,
I just bought a model 94 and went out yesterday to sight it in. Well, it shoots high. I even took the adjustment leaf out of the rear sight so the buck horn sits flat down on the barrel and it still shoots high,
If somebody could tell me what to do to sight it in I sure would appreciate it.
Maybe a taller front front sight?
Thanks.

I’m no expert at open sights but have several Marlins with them. To lower your point of impact you need to raise the rear sight, using the elevator, not lower it. At first read it sounds like your going the wrong direction.

Bill,
It is quiet possible that you are right. I will try it out.
Thanks.

Now that I have looked at the sights again I can see that you are right. I don’t how I got it wrong.
Thanks a bunch.

The point of impact is just that for a particular rifle/ammo combination. Adjusting the sights doesn't change the point impact. You adjust the sights to match the point of impact. If your point of impact is high (above where you want it to be) the rear sight should be moved lower or your front sight should be moved higher.

No sir. He'll need a taller front sight. Skinner Sights sells the front sights

Vertical Adjustment (Up and down):

If your shot is above (needs to be lower) your target using both sights facing directly at your target, the rear sight should be moved lower or your front sight should be moved higher. If your shot is below (needs to be higher) your target using both sights facing directly at your target, the rear sight should be moved higher or your front sight should be moved lower. Always remember: Move the rear sight in the same direction you want your point of impact to move & your front sight the opposite direction you want POI to move.

I think I’ll go for the theory of moving the rear sight in the direction you want your point of impact to move. Just like when your siding in with the scope you move the crosshairs up if you want the point of impact to go up.
But thin I’m back where I started. The rear side is as low as it will go on my gun still shoes high. There’s no way to adjust the front side because it’s fixed. So I guess I have to get a taller sight for the front?

The rear sight needs to go down. I think BB got confused on this one. Since you’re all the way down you need to buy a taller front sight as you suggested.

I would inspect the rifle carefully. What you’re saying is not unheard of, but it’s not a very common problem on a rifle that was sorted out over a hundred years ago. Maybe the rear sight is not correct to the rifle.

wp,
I agree. I may go with one of the fiber optic sight sets. The ones I have on my Marlin 35 Rem. has a rear sight that is adjustable for elevation and windage.

Texgun, the turret is marked “up” for bullet placement but the reticle moves down to accomplish it. Look through your scope the next time you make adjustments. It will be the same for rear sights.

P-102,
You are right. I made an incorrect analogy.

I was pretty whisked up and should have known better to reply past my bedtime. The thread I sent sounded correct. Either it’s wrong or I can’t read. Both could be true
I suppose.

Now that the fog has lifted I agree with the group here.

What bullet weight are you using? I’ve had occasional luck with changing loads giving considerable changes in point of impact. If you can’t find or don’t want to mess with the front sight…

TX,
Now that you have mentioned it, I did experience that once in the past. I had forgotten about it.

Blackout Bill,
No harm done. I hope you sign any important documents or call a groans wake them up.

A lot of confusing answers.
To go down with POI go up with rear sight
Reverse if POI is low
RIGHT

Dalee, raising the rear sight causes the sight picture to move downward which, in turn, has them raise the barrel to the target…..shooting higher.

You are backward.

Impact up desired, raise the rear sight. Impact down desired, lower the rear sight.

Look at tang mounted peep sights for lever guns. To shoot long range, you incrementally raise the rear peep, which causes you to raise the muzzle toward the sky.

Irons on ARs, you leave the rear peep set for 100M. Zeroing, you move your front post. Make the post chase the bullet. Impact down desired, raise the front sight.

How high is it at what range? Lower the rear sight elevator all the way down and take a fine bead, showing 1/2 or less of the bead and use a 6 o’clock hold. You should be close at 100 yards. Sighting in that manner, the curve on the top of the bead will show you when it is centered in the base of the notch very clearly. The rear leaf is held by two screws on a 94. You can fine tune elevation further by loosening those two screws to fine tune the rear leaf elevation and then slide up or down, then tighten back up in the slide. Windage is adjusted by tapping the rear sight left or right in the dovetail until it is centered.
Move the rear sight in the direction you want the poi to move. (Drop it for a lower poi. Raise it for a higher poi. Tap left or right in the direction you want to move windage) 3” high at 50 yards will be dead nuts at about 170 yards and about 3” low at 200 yards. If the rifle is capable and the shooters eyes are up to it 1”- 1 1/2” groups at 100 yards are possible. 2 1/2” groups at 100 are pretty normal accuracy for a 94 with irons.

Hope that gets you squared away.

Smokey,
I had forgotten about the adjustable leaf on the rear sight.
I knew which way to move the rear sight and said I had it bottomed out on the barrel. My question was “what now” and you answered it.
Thanks.
