We have had a 1 point buck, yes I said it, 1 point buck on our property for the past 2 years (that I have seen). Now we have 2 single point bucks on the property and am wondering what’s the restriction on this? Everything on TPWD website and the rules and regulations say 1 unbranched AND… etc.

Due to it being a management long term property, I would like to see him set at the dinner table rather than continuing to lay seed.

Thoughts, clarification, anything would be helpful

There's a bunch of those freezer deer all over
the countryside.
Best to get with the local GW since he's the one that'll
make the call

Is it legal to shoot? I’m assuming it is not legal being that it does not meet any of the and/or scenarios as specified by the rules and regulations. I follow the law and rule to a T so I’m just curious

Your right just the first time I have seen him this year and thought someone on here would be a game warden to give some definition as my wife is looking at her first potential down deer as I type.

A legal buck deer is defined as having a hardened antler protruding through the skin AND:
At least one unbranched antler; or
An inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater.
Bag limit 2 bucks: No more than 1 buck may have an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. [In other words, one may harvest 1 buck with at least 1 unbranched antler and 1 buck with an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. Or, one may chose to harvest 2 bucks with at least 1 unbranched antler. BUT, one may NOT harvest 2 bucks with an inside spread of 13 inches or greater.]

Being under long term management, I am surprised no one there knows what a legal buck is. confused2

But nothing wrong with asking so here you go. The pictures to go with the antler restriction rules already posted. From the outdoor annual. https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/regs/animals/white-tailed-deer

He is legal. I asked a warden about a one antlered (4 pt) deer I had seen 2 years in a row if I could take him under the 13" width rule, he said no BUT if he was to break it off fighting and it left a single point remaining I could take him under the spike rule.

If it’s one point it’s obviously unbranched. Cut and dry he’s legal.

Agree with this^^^

He has one antler protruding AND one unbtanched……AND does not mean it has to have two antlers .

One antler can meet both criteria.

IF the deer has at least one un-branched antler (a hardened antler protruding through the skin and at least 1" long) then it is legal (as a buck deer).

IF the antler is not hardened and protruding (nubbin) or is not at least 1" long...then it is still legal to shoot as an 'antlerless deer'.

So if you want to shoot it this season....you should be good to go.

Thank y’all for the clarification.

This is a new property to me but am man again got in a manner that would be beneficial for my kids to get to have their kids shoot their first deer. Not a long term management property yet.

Guess I got hung up on the phrase “AND” on their website requiring more than just a single unbranched antler, with nothing on the other side.

Why not call your local warden and ask them if uncertain:

We always ID the local GW and reach out to him from time to time. Letting him know your location and providing questions like this one will be noted somewhere in the attic of his brain. It should only help. Save the number on your phone.

Me as well. There's obviously no branch in no antler, and the remaining branched antler makes it qualify as an antlered buck and not antlerless.

Yeah, I don’t understand why this would be confusing.

This is why antler restriction are dumb. If someone wants to take a buck for meat and is willing to use their tag on it then they should be allowed to do so without worrying about being arrested.
