Labor Day Weekend is my last fill up

Now. We will not fill again until January.

Since the thread on cottonseed was already started I’ll just use this for my question-

Why would one build or buy feeders for the stuff rather than just setting the 1000# sack on the ground and cut most of the bag away?

It looks to me as if most of these feeders just hold the stuff in one place, maybe I’m missing something besides some level of waste. Seems like it’s exposed to all outdoor elements so it seems like placing your tote in a large feed pen, cut away most of the tote and if just left there it ought to work and avoid a lot of time/effort.

I have no problem buying commercial cottonseed feeders or making them myself but I don’t understand the upside of spending the time and money and time is something I just don’t have enough of.

We’re stuck in severe drought up here, wheat isn’t even coming up again- we finally got some last year but it wasn’t as good as most years and there isn’t any or much irrigated ground near me. Not really sure what they’re feeding on now- there really isn’t any green and wheat is what bridges the gap this time of year up here. Figured if they ever needed supplemental feeding it’s probably now.

I know people (good hunters) who just shovel it out on the ground or dump front end loader buckets filled with it.

How do you get them to start eating the cotton seed? Add some corn to it?

If you have hogs, DO NOT add corn. Just put it out, and the deer will find it. Once you have 1 / 2 eating it, the others will feel like they are missing out and will eat.

I tried cotton seed this fall at my place in East Texas mixing corn and chicken scratch on it to get the deer started, but they never wanted to eat it.

Brought some home from out there and mine started eating after about a week. Just spread at base of feeder where corn fell on it. Now I don’t have hogs here at the house but I could see if u do that may not work

I started feeding CS in May I think. At first it was slow so I mixed a small amount of corn with it. It really took off then, bear in mind the bucks were traveling together. Since the bucks are not together now the doe are consuming very little. Will start again next February..

Why are you feeding cotton seed?

Dave, feeding as a supplement and believe it attracts and holds deer in the area. As mentioned since the bucks are not running together consumption is way down.
