What really intrigued me was the bullet that they used. It uses really high-end aerodynamic theory and it's not a conventional bullet design. The flight time of just under 30 seconds was pretty impressive as well considering from their stated muzzle velocity the bullet at some point was probably 2,700 to 3,000 ft above the ground at its apogee. It was more like they were calling in artillery from a really weak gun then shooting a rifle. Great observation. There was no doubt a lot of experience with long range ballistics at play, as evidenced by the descriptions on their website on what services they offer their clients. They've evidently learned where you cross the line between what a common rifle bullet can and cannot do at that distance. I suspect the feat was also half taking on the challenge and the other half attracting publicity for their business. I mean, would you want to learn from someone who can make a one mile shot or someone who has hit a target at more than four times that distance?

If a buddy came over and said he hit a target 4 miles away in 5 shots and could do it again, I’d really be impressed. But, if he said he shot at it 20 times, let the barrel cool, shot 20 more and let it cool, and then shot it 20 more and let it cool, and then hit it on the 8th shot in string 4, I’m not really sure what my response would be.
Many years ago, when I was young, there was this fat doe about 775 yards away (stepped it off later). My buddy said I couldn’t hit it, so I had to try. With him spotting, I walked the rounds in and actually killed the deer on the 11th shot. Shouldn’t have done it, but it did get eaten later. No way you could call it good shooting.

A doe actually let you shoot at her 11 times without running off? That’s more interesting than the OP lol.

I couldn't get past the elevation of the barrel to the scope. With that much elevation, that's ranging artillery onto the target, not rifle marksmanship.

The information, and schooling to shoot 800 yards, is the same as 1800, 2800, 4000 yards. Their 68 misses were most likely, majority, wind. Wind is the trick at ANY long range shot. The longer the flight time, the more chances the wind changes from trigger squeeze to arrival. Maximum ordinate on that shot being so high, the projectile is suffering in wind the shooter and the spotter cannot see.

Given they're slinging a 422-grain projectile that's landing at 689 ft/sec, that may be a legitimate position. The forward spotter, typically either Shepard or his wife, Lynn Sherwood-Humphries, when more than 100 yards from the target, would most frequently hear a whistle above, right or left, and a “thump” somewhere behind or between them and the target, but could not see any dust.
Yeah, that kinda sounds like a description of ranging incoming artillery.

I am just impressed with the experimental work with aerodynamics they did with the bullet. Calling in artillery type shots isn't exactly precision riflemanship. Coming up with gear that will toss a bullet that far is just the first step on the long road to precision riflemanship at that range.

This is probably equivalent to a 22lr at 1000 yards.
At what point do we go to a shoulder fired 20mm? 4.5 miles?

68 attempts before one hit.
Most of the rifle world is throwing poop on this like monkeys. Of course it is Dan posting it, like it's some great thing.
We need some standards, like 5 attempts or its not a record. Agree. I read the previous record was also hit on the 69th shot.

Some folks here are poo pooing they're accomplishment by denigrating them for taking 68 shots before they hit the target. Something tells me that if they were to do it again today it would take them a whole lot less than 68 shots to make a hit.
I don't mind they took 68 shots. I mind that they took that long and then certify it as some sort of record? And this is the target they shot at????? I do agree with the shooter's decision to keep his name silent. Certifying this as a record is embarassing. Wise man Target should be no larger than a person or animal or other actual real life target, and should get no more than 3-5 shots. Anything more than that is fine if you want to do it, but don't pretend that it's anything remotely meaningful or should count as a "record". Could I hit at 4.4 miles under those circumstances? Nope. Neither could these guys. Not saying I could. I am saying that having a record for rifle shooting should have requirements that make the scenario realistic and the accomplishment meaningful.

Somewhere I have some charts published by the military on how to fire an M2 in an indirect fire mode at maximum possible range. I wonder how the math on that plays out compared to the shots they took here.

The tape grid must have made it easier for spotters to determine and relay correction data.

Meh. I'm with JG. In fact, I'm not impressed with any attempts that take over 10 shots. If it can't be duplicated it is just luck throwing lead down range.

If I hit 68 tee shots on a par 3 before I made it would it still be a hole in one? Apparently so. “Congrats on the hole in one after only 68 attempts. Here is your participation trophy.”

Yeah. Now had they followed up the hit with a second hit, I'd be much more impressed. Agreed. Given nothing changed in the physical setup, the variance between the two might yield some interesting info on the performance of all the variables. But then, I suspect there were lessons learned the crew will keep to themselves.

We need some standards, like 5 attempts or its not a record. I agree, as far as world records go, but I do like to see these things done and how they got there. What I don’t understand is that they thought that scope was their best option. Aside from it being a Vortex, a FFP, really? I’m a FFP guy, but for a rig like that and at that sort of distance, what was the thinking behind that?

If mirage is too bad, you can back off magnification a bit and get some clarity back.
I have FFP on the .300 Norma Mag. NF ATACR 7-35X F-1
I would use the same scope on a rig for 2+ miles as well. Those guys add a second prism ahead of the scope objective. Image shifts 100 MOA/ 29 Mils if memory serves.
