I was poking around my favorite online knife stores and stumbled onto Carter Cutlery’s amazing traditional Japanese neck knives. They seemed very slick, but the neck knife concept has very mixed reviews with perhaps three in four being less than enthused by their experience. Anyway, I wasn’t willing to drop Carter Cutlery cash on an experiment, so I picked up a Bradford G-Necker cleaver pattern to give neck knives a try. Has anyone else given them a try? How did it go?

I recently did something similar. As expected, unless I kept it inside my shirt, it swings everywhere. So, unless I’m stationary somewhere, it’s not really accessible - maybe that’s OK if it’s intended use is as a “back-up” knife.

I found a lanyard from work that had a clip near the end where I could clip it to my shirt. That stopped the swinging and made it more useful for casual walking around.

Bottom line, I’m still not sure I’d use this for.

Okay, I lied. I just found a Carter muteki for comparatively reasonable money and scooped it up.

Many moons ago I spent considerable time in the Far North and spent the winters "bundled up" A neck knife, that is a knife carried in a sheath with a loop hung over the neck, was very handy. I started with a belt sheath- buried under coats, sweaters, etc. but impossible to get it when needed. The neck type sheath was common with native tribes around the Great Lakes that traveled a lot by canoe.

If I'm hunting/camping, or whatever in the woods, I will have a neck knife. I've never really have it get in the way and it is light enough that I don't even notice it.
Besides, you never know what you're going to come across and it is a bit of self-promotion. grin

I was "down under" for a ten day hunt. This one was only medium size. grin Rather passive IF you didn't get in their way.

I've owned a couple neck knives. The 1st was a Pancho knife, loved that thing but pretty sure me ex tossed it while we were married. She was always worried I was going to miss the sheath and cut my neck for some reason. I currently have a cheap one off Amazon. Works great for river trot lining and stuff - no fumbling around in your pocket chest deep in water when you need a knife. Also usual take it along hunting, its just handy to have.

The Bradford is in Elmax and The Carter is Hitachi white steel clad with 410 stainless. There’s no comparison in workmanship, but I like them both.

Some type of monitor. I can't even remember what they called it, but I'm sure the guys still remember what I called it!

I've tried a bunch of neck knives but have only kept one...it's a Hideaway knife that was ground by Mick Strider probably 15 years ago... They had a bunch of famous knifemakers grind some when the company started and I got one from Mick... not sure if they do that anymore or not, but it's still a good choice for my needs

I’m really liking both of mine so far. I’ve replaced the paracord with 4mm ball chain, which is supposedly safer, although I think the paracord is more comfortable.

I started using one a couple years ago as a utility knife and was surprised how much more I used it vs. forgetting I had a pocket knife. It’s also handy when you see someone struggling to open a box or package. Only downside was Ive lost a few while carrying corn bags and other heavy objects outdoors, up against my chest. My solution was to just carry the cheap $12 ones off Amazon when working outside.

I have a couple hanging from my rear view mirror and grab one or the other quite often as I exit the vehicle. Both are inexpensive Crkt brand but they stay in their sheath well. I have a hard time dealing with stuff in my pockets. Have used them for decades for anything from bird hunting, trout fishing you name it. The pointed one goes with me when I shoot my compound to shut off the lighted knocks.
