The reason law enforcement has recently embraced the 9mm is because the recoil is more manageable particularly for females. Better ammo helped too but ease of use was the main reason.

I’ve got a like new Gen 3 Glock 22 and a whole assortment on .40 ammo if anybody is interested. I thought I was going to get into it, but 9mm is just too easy.

That’s not to say it isn’t good; everyone is touting the 9mm as the be-all end-all of defensive handgun cartridges since the FBI came out and said 9mm is “just as good” as a 40 or 45 or 10mm.

I take the FBI with a grain of salt. They were also the genesis of the 40 because the 9 frequently lacked the punch to stop a bad guy with one shot. Hence the two to the body, one to the head training instructors commonly teach today with 9mm.

Yep. I don’t want to get shot with any of them, but since the FBI and other agencies have quit the .40 so has popular culture.

Which is also why they quit the 10 and went to the .40.

I don’t really think it matters what a person carries: pick one or two guns that you like, can shoot well, and will practice with. Make sure your gun is reliable with carry ammo. Carry whenever you can.

My two main carry guns are a g43x and a 1911. I pick what I want to carry and carry it. I’m not overly concerned with which caliber will perform the best. I’ve won the same number of gunfights with a Ruger Single Six as I have a AK.

Love my 40. It's actually a Taurus 24/7. But runs flawless, has a great trigger, and has fantastic ergonomics

I have carried a xd40 since I was 21. First pistol I ever bought and it still works today with plenty of ammo for it.

Two years ago in the ammo crunch, I couldn’t find any 9mm. (Insert comment here that it’s my fault for not stocking up earlier). The only ammo I could find that no one was buying was 40. So I picked up a vp40 and went back to training.

Fast forward a year and 40 became hard to find as the only ammo on the shelf was 9mm.

I think it’s a good idea to keep the 40 around with a small stash of ammo in the event that ammo gets weird again. Which will definitely happen.

Here's my 40 and its little friend. It's my go-to woods gun, though sometimes I'll take a 357 Blackhawk or Ruger Mark IV depending. Some days I might as well take the 32.

Another thing to keep in mind. The performance advancements that they have made in 9mm over the years, also carry over to the 40 cal. The same powders used for the 9mm also work well in the 40 cal. So, the gap from the old 9mm to the newer 9mm rounds, also apply to the 40 cal. So there is still a performance gain in the 40 cal over the 9mm. You can get some really good velocities in 40 cal, with some really good bullet options on the market.

I do think that having all your eggs in one basket for one round will cause a huge issue when more ammo shortages happen. The pricing on 9mm a few years ago was about 3-5 times higher than what it should have been. I saw this first hand when suppliers were trying to sell low end 9mm components at crazy high prices.

I have a Tomcat just like that. Neat little pocket gun.

I’m not sure about the VP40, but a lot of .40’s can be easily converted to 9mm with a barrel and mag swap. Kinda hard to start with a 9mm and go to .40 though.

Yeah I hear more about that with the usp series. When looking at hk parts, I’m not sure if the vp40 conversion barrel is real or coming soon. It’s a good idea but I’m ok with just moving that into storage. I’ve moved onto something else anyway, found a gem at a pawn shop way up in Sherman.
