Did them for several years, burned out on it. It was fun, but is a lot of work.

I used to do competitions now my son and daughter-in-law do them when they have time. They do 5 or so a year and usually place. [Linked Image]

Same here. Competition bbq is a different animal. All about that one perfect bite. I prefer cooking for friends and family these days.

Cooked in a couple. Not a big fan, cooked some of the best food of my life that never placed and had some flops I’d feel bad feeding my family at a birthday party that placed.

Lots of pellet smokers on here, is that a separate league from real smokers? How does that work? I guess with pellet smoking, you got to be really good at pressing iPhone app buttons?

I’d put my pellet smoked ribs or brisket up against your “real smoker” in a blind taste testing.

Yeah, but that is cheating. Like fishing pole vs fishing net.. Dove shot on Thursday smoking tonight...

Well then don’t be talking chit about pellet smokers just because you like to do it the old way if it’s “cheating”. It’s the way of the future no need in baby sitting a stick burner for 12 hours anymore.

Dove look bomb by the way I’d eat the hell out of those. I’ve been so busy I didn’t even know it was dove season until I saw the “now drinking” tread and saw your post with all the dove. I need so slow down when I start losing hunting seasons lol.

Edit: that sounded kinda rude but wasn’t trying to be. cheers

I'll talk chit about pellet smokers all I want, but you are missing my point. In BBQ competitions, do pellet smokers really compete against real smokers?

I cooked in some and much like you, I found what wins, isn't what I or anyone I know would call good BBQ.

If it was a true blind taste testing I bet they would.

Again I’d put my pellet smoker up against anything you cook in a blind taste testing. You called it cheating.. why you scared?

Stick smokers always say that pellet smokers don’t give a good smoke flavor. So if we are at a BBQ comp anything should be allowed and judged blind madly based on the meat presented, no matter what it was cooked on. I’ve absolutely nailed briskets on a stick burner and absolutely ruined briskets on a pellet smoker. One may use an app, but it still takes a little luck and know how. If you’re a stick burner purist, then no Wi-Fi for r other meat thermometers are allowed, you know, cook it like a purist, go be feel only.

Stick burner here, for the most part enjoy using it, then there are those times when it is just a whole lot of work and a pain in the rear because of weather or??
Most of us stick burners like to poke fun at Pellet smoker peeps, never tasted anything off one but I bet it is plenty good and can see one ending up in my backyard in the near future!

I have two stick burners and there is a pellet pooper on the back porch. Both will turn out a good product, but the pellet smoker does not produce as good of flavor as a mix of Oak and Mesquite wood. The smoke off the pellets is different than the smoke off of wood, it just has a different flavor. The pellet rig is super convenient, easy to use, basically an oven, and gets used 90% of the time. It’s much easier for me to just have the wife do all the grilling and smoking when I am busy.

I picked up a Masterbuilt gravity 1050 last year. You get the best of both worlds. You can use charcoal, lump, wood chunks and splits in the hopper. Temp can range from 175 to 700 deg. Love it so far! The best part is I got it for $700 off! Paid $216 delivered. banana

I think Bar-B-Q cookoffs are like chili cookoffs. They are cooked for the judges to take one bite. It's not real good eating. Years ago I cooked in chili cookoffs. Was a lot of fun. I qualified for the world finals three times. My chili was not good eating chili but it won me cookoffs.

So what makes a chili winner?
