Sitting on the back patio having my coffee, listening to the dove hunters. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy dove hunting when I go, and I'll often accept an invite to go, but I just don't enjoy it enough to put forth any effort into planning for it.

Good luck out there guys!

Would rather do quite a few things outdoors other than dove hunt. Too much effort for too little reward.

I like to dove hunt but I’ve caught a lot of fish listening to shotgun blasts in the distance.

For years I lived for opening day of dove season.

When I was was in my teens and early 20’s I didn’t get to go dove hunting as often as I liked so when I was able to make my own schedule I vowed to never miss an opening day and for over 10 years I didn’t.

But the past several years my dove hunting trips have gone down significantly, with me going the past few seasons only a couple of times.

Next year 2 of the 3 kids will be driving so this will help with schedules significantly, but what really put the kibosh on my dove hunting was I started hunting out west during archery season, so while most are sitting on a tailgate drinking a cold one blasting birds I’m on a mountain somewhere looking for 4 legged critters. After a few missed opening days it doesn't bother me anywhere near what it used to.

But, I do enjoy a good dove hunt. One of the best sporting experiences one can have imo

I'm in the same boat as the OP. 'Think it's probably based on your experiences. I never experienced waves and waves of birds coming in when I was growing up. I know it happens, or at least used to. Dad had a dove lease outside of Poth. It was okay, but it was before I was really old enough to participate much. I am indebted to him for showing me how to properly take care of any kind of game animal, but, being a wee lad and driving home well after dark and having to help pick birds under the side yard light, almost falling asleep on the stool, didn't exactly light a fire under me. I've told y'all, I'm lazy with a capital 'L'. And I hate sweat. And I've pretty much quit drinking beer. 'Hard to set a martini down for a shot. grin

Been decades since my last dove hunt but have found it to be a great opportunity to visit and socialize with others while in the field. I always enjoyed pointing out the birds that flew off full of lead.

Same here! I always seem to run out of shells before I ran out of doves. Especially when I was in high school. Could only afford one box and sometimes that had to last two trips.

I love to dove hunt but hadn't been in a few years. Not many dove at my deer lease, so I don't have a place to go. I used to pay for a day hunt but got peppered a couple of times and I was done. Wished I could find a good dove lease.

From high school until the time I was about 50 I loved to hunt dove. But not on opening day. I liked to hunt the cold fronts later in the season. I also really enjoyed hunting the split season around Christmastime. Due to blown out shoulders the pain isn't worth it anymore.

Our dove season here is so hit and miss, you can't count on it much anymore. Usually by now we have had a couple frosts and they have started to move a little farther South. When the ranchers run cows out on the desert in BLM areas, the water troughs are all full and it can be fast and furious shooting them coming out of the sagebrush and lavas. Then it's fun! The girls are going to Boise for 3 days so I might throw the 410 in the Jeep and go play for 4 hours this weekend.

I experienced the wave after wave of doves once. On an invited hunt in West Texas. It was a hoot! Like I said, I enjoy it, just not so much that I want to put any effort into doing it. LOL. I've got peas and wheat to plant for bow season still!

Growing up, it was a huge event. We planted about 50 acres of sunflowers, had a big bbq the day before a had a great turnout and birds everywhere. Most years, anybody who could shoot had limits by 9:00. I moved away and was into other things in September for several years and got out of the habit. I tried going for a few times when I first moved to Texas, but the hunting wasn't great and I just couldn't get excited about it. I also don't like hunting in the heat, which didn't help. I have a limited number of day to hunt each year, and when my wife pointed out the very limited meat I was bringing home compared to literally anything else, it was easy to quit bothering. I have been invited on a few hunts since then, and if the birds are moving I still enjoy it, just not enough to put any effort into it.

I must admit that it is all about the numbers. I seldom get a limit but I'll often get 7-8. If I am only getting one or two, then the doves go in the freezer until I have enough to eat but it takes the edge off things. I need around 7 to stay interested.

Use to enjoy it tremendously, considered it the beginning of hunting season with more trips to the lease. We don't have many birds on our lease and have just put it on the back burner. Been a while since I hunted a place where there were so many in the evening you could not shoot fast enough. Maybe it is a age thing.

Never a big dove hunter. Just started back a few years ago. Would have been there this week but the wife had an urgent medical test yesterday and her brother had surgery scheduled for today but that was canceled last night. Maybe get to go next week. Will admit I suck at wing shooting but the wife likes to dove hunt. She says she likes it because she doesn't have to be quiet like with deer hunting! HaHa.

I've only been a handful of times in the past several years. I love them just didn't have the time or close birds...

I hope to make it out a time or two this season but not looking promising.... frown

Like others have said I will go, and enjoy it, just not enough for a whole season lease when I might only go 2 or 3 times. When I was younger and worked for the state and had access to acres and acres of penitentiary farm land I went every chance i could. The warden's opening day BBQ and afternoon hunt was as regular an event for me as Christmas

I hunted every year until the bird numbers began to drop dramatically around Mason. They continued to drop until I finally gave it up. The numbers, by the way, have not improved. Very sad.

Fetched and cleaned a few thousand as a kid for sportswriters and big time hunters.
It got me lots of priceless keepsakes and memories.

Haven't hunted 'em in 25 years, about the same time quail started disappearing around here.
Still see a few dove but haven't seen a quail here in many, many years.

Cheers,

Never miss; for you older guys, it’s scientific, as you age that fire goes out in your body in many way. Studies show most people quit hunting at 65 or so. As such, declining hunters in general. Something about, just too much effort vs drinking a beer watching football. Or playing with your phone eating ice cream. Hunting is hard.
