The cross plains of Texas. He will be shot on sight then put on scales if we can load him. [Linked Image]

He’s a wooly booger, which it makes it a bit difficult, but he’s also stacked with muscle and has a sagging belly from all the protein he’s been eating. I’m putting him at +/- 20 lbs of 380

That's a lot of pig. I'd say 330. Why are you feeding him? I thought my dogs were getting expensive. I bet he can put away the protein.

380 I’d say. Hard to say without more for scale in the pic.

325. Never as big as they seem when you get them on the scale. Looking forward to you ground checking him.

Exactly.

He is well filled out and mature, but my educated guess is he just one side or the other of 300 lbs.

Just under 300. I had to start putting them on the scale when a buddy laughed at my past estimations. He had a lot more experience and he was correct. I was over guessing them.....most folks do.

Yep. I think he’ll break 300, but not by a lot. 300 is a big pig, and he is just that.

It is common for folks to overestimate hog weights. Grossly so in many cases. So you were in good company.

An honest 300 lb. hog (most places in Texas) is a BIG hog. Yes, they can get substantially bigger on occasion.....but I can count on one hand the number of hogs I've killed over the last 30 years that exceeded 300 lbs and I'm in Deep East Texas (we have big hogs).

Like many, you discovered that when you actually start weighing them.....most will weigh less than what was first thought.

Through the years.....I've discovered that inaccuracies come from two sources.

1. Inexperience at judging weight and no intentional misrepresentation. Honest mistake.

2. Intentional 'embelishment' (hog hunters being second only to fishermen) where the person knowingly presents the animal as heavier and bigger than it is. Often accompanied by a 'forced perspective' photo of the pig.

You can be rightfully proud of ANY pig you take out of the population. A large hog (while impressive to look at) doesn't necessarily require more hunting 'prowess' than a smaller one and both will go on to procreate if you don't remove them from the herd.

IF not trophy hunting (for a mount) my advice is to kill any and ALL hogs you encounter. They are a scourge.

Exactly my experience. I've shot hogs I was sure would top 300, to find out they fell short. No matter how big they looked to the naked eye.

We don’t have any pens around any of the protein feeders. For this hog to be able to able to get a snack of protein, he must be taller than 99% of all the hogs. The deer keep the protein out of the very end of the trough thus pigs get little to no feed. They don’t come around the feeders often because they can’t get much. The deer spill some and that’s what the pigs pick up. We shoot on sight but they multiply faster than we can eradicate.
I’ll post the weight when we give him a dirt nap.

I agree with the other gentlemen that most folks over-estimate hog weight. Based on my own experience, but also without any other size reference in the frame, I'd say he's lest than 275. Still a large hog and lots of pork chops there. Kill that sucka... rifle

I'm gonna guess that he is in the 300-325 range. I've thought about castrating a little boar that I catch in the trap and let him loose just to see how big he'd get...but then I'd have to let a live pig walk. We just don't do that. Even though I'm sure a few have done that, I'd bet that less than 1/10th of 1 percent of the pigs out there in the wild are castrated and released. I'll bet this one isn't castrated.

edit: after posting, I looked back at the picture. Are his ears bobbed in the picture? If so, then maybe I'm changing my bet!
