#1 ---- quit making excuses when you miss, admit you are a lousy shot,, #2 ---- choke -- use a full choke, if the bird is close follow it out and then shoot. #3--- quit bringing a case of shells to kill 15 doves, if you don't have your limit after 1 box, go back to #1 and #2. DON'T put 3 shots into a gun, it basically gives you permission to become a 'blaster' instead of a hunter,, if you have missed twice, it is unlikely you will hit it on the 3rd shot.
And lastly -------- pick a bird and track it - wait for the perfect shot ( this will be different with each hunter), then fire once. Then go pick up your bird.
I expect my in box will be flooded with 'thank you's " ---------- to all , you're welcome.

Or sit under their favorite high wire.

Not true, I kill lots of birds with that 3rd shot, including triples. You must shoot an O/U, so you are anti-3rd shell.

But depending on landscape, lots of time I do not go for a double or triple, sometimes it is critical to mark that first bird or you will never find it if you take your eyes of the first mark. But there are also times I miss first 2 shots and hit with the 3rd, but the bird does not go far, I go boom boom boom real fast.

I always referred to the third shot as a waste of ammo. I only carry an O/U to the field, I don’t need to shoot a triple.

Hell I put 5 shells in if I could, especially for duck. And especially if a group of birds land in your spread, dove as well, 2 quick skillet shots, 3 shots when they fly up, raining birds!!

That seems like it would take the fun out of putting lead in the air. Firm believer in you can't kill 'em if you don't shoot.

Some auto loaders will float a 4th shell when the plug is in, who will admit to doing it?

It takes the same amount of time to get in front of it as it does behind it.

The 4the shell does not go in the magazine, it floats, have you tried?
Some semi auto shotguns can float a 4th shel in the magazine loading port and Benelli and Beretta and two of them.

Only time I may come from behind is the second bird of a double. I usually hunt with over unders. I don’t feel handcuffed only having two in the gun. I bird hunt a good bit with a tight choked 410. The 410 will put your shooting in order.
