I'm ready to upgrade from my 2006 Ford F150 King Ranch 4x4, and I wanted to get some suggestions from y'all.
I'm looking for something within the last 5 years, 4x4, crew cab, decent on mileage, ability to tow a fair amount, and is reliable!
I could go new, or used, with under 50k miles on it.
I like the Ford King Ranch and Platinum trims, but I am also open to other trucks, for sure.
Looking for suggestions on what you would recommend - and conversely, if you are aware of ones with issues, I want to know what to absolutely stay away from.
Thanks in advance.

Highly subjective on the THF.
Toyota Tundra (V8)...meets all your criteria except so so gas mileage, you won't pass up too many gas stations.

I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect. Some people live an entire lifetime & wonder if they ever made a difference in the world, a veteran doesn't have that problem. Reagan

V-8 Tundra checks almost all your boxes. I'm getting about 14.5 MPG but that's with zero city driving.

F-250, diesel. My F-350 is giving me 18+ mpg. More if I get a quartering rear tailwind. Edit: Son in law says my old F-250 is still getting 16-17 mpg.

To be honest it’s a crap shoot as far as the issues go as any truck can have issues. I’d suggest going and driving one from every manufacturer you’re considering and make sure decision based on which truck you like the best.

You'll get a different opinion from everyone on this. Pick the one you like the looks of the most and buy that. They all make lemons and they all make great ones.
I will only drive GMC, as I think it looks the best, and have been very reliable for me. If gas mileage is a concern don't get a Tundra. Other than that, they will all perform about the same on average, IMO.

you should have a S-load of choices in your area. Bad thing is they are all way overpriced.
Look for one with a clean Car Fax.
Then roll the dice

"Ability to tow a fair amount" Care to elaborate? Recreational vehicle? Daily driver? How many miles a year do you drive?

If I was buying now… only new don’t think especially now you save much buying gently used.
Chevy 1500 diesel Ford F-150 ecoboost Toyota twin turbo
Those are the 3 I would look at hardest. When ram comes out with their 3.0 liter straight 6 turbo gas it would likely be on the list or knock Ford off.

Went from an Ford '09 FX4 with the 5.4 to a 2500 Limited 4x4 RAM with 6.7 Cummins and love it. Tow whatever I want, 17-19mpg around town and or towing, cant wait to actually get some highway mileage on it. I'm sure it will surpass 20mpg on a trip longer than what I'm doing. Get what makes you happy, you don't buy a truck for its gas mileage, but its a nice perk

The State Fair is in one month - if you can wait - and you're in the area - you can look at every single manufacturer in one single place and drink beer while doing it.

Since 04, I have only owned Fords, so I really can't say anything about anything other than Ford. My 2004 f150 sold me on Ford. I never had a Ford prior to owning that one. It lasted me 340,000 miles. I got rid of it when it started showing signs of serious oil consumption. What really struck me was that all the accessories on the engine were original. AC, starter, alternator, power steering...none of them ever had to be replaced. I did have to rebuild the tranny and the timing chain system at around 180K miles. But that was it. 2017 I bought a new f150 with the 2.7 ecoboost. Besides the fact that it's easily the fastest vehicle that I've ever owned, it so far has been ultra reliable too. 105,000 miles and have only done maintenance items. Gas mileage, before the lift and tires, I was getting 21-22mpg. 2.5" lift on the front and 1" lift on the back brought that down to about 19-20, and the aggressive one size larger tires brought it down to about 18. I opted for the 3.73 gears, and interestingly, I get about the same in the city as I do on the highway. If I'd have gone with the standard 3.55 gears, I might be getting even better mileage. As for towing, it is rated up to 8800 lbs, but the most I've ever towed with it is about 4500lbs. No issues there.

Towing or no towing?
If towing, I would go with a diesel if you can afford it. At the end of the day, best gas mileage avg for towing and not towing is a diesel. I went from a 2016 F150 3.5 ecoboost that i HATED to a Ram 2500 cummins and I LOVE it except that I already want to delete it. Every manufacture is going to the small v6 turbo route. Although seems like a good idea, the second you add any kind of load to it, your gas mileage is like 10-14 at best. So then you look at the Tundra and it gets like 15 at best and towing like 10. So you look at diesel and they are amazing for everything you can imagine except that stupid exhaust and DEF fluid. So there is no winning with trucks right now, you have to pick which evil you want to deal with. My new ram 2500 had to go back to the shop at 9000 mi because one of the sensors in the exhaust system already went bad. Easy enough to fix until I realized it was $1100 to replace. So warranty and a trip to the dealership and lots of waiting around and it was fixed for free.
EPA has gone after a lot of big tuners this last year or so and PPEI was fined 3 million for selling components to delete diesels. So you won't find anything for any 2022's right now to delete these trucks. Kind of stuck with stock for awhile. Eventually I am sure someone, somewhere (probably in Canada) will release deletes for these newer models, but right now no dice and you have to live with the crappy no black smoke cancer that comes with diesel trucks. Supreme court did rule that the EPA is over reaching on companies but it has scared the diesel world and still no 2022 tunes.... yet. Someone will release one eventually but when is the biggest question right now.
I have a 20 min commute daily with my diesel, I am seeing 21-22 mpg empty and 16 mpg towing my 30 ft travel trailer or bass boat (huge weight difference but still see exactly 16 mpg when towing). I would say pick a truck you love and are comfortable in. No truck is perfect, and even though I have had issues already with my diesel, I probably will never be without a diesel truck again. Gas vs Diesel, there is no comparison.

Let me say this... In the next year or two, I will probably park the big diesel and I will be looking really close at the GMC baby dmax truck as a daily driver. I have been in one and completely impressed with that little truck. Lots of torque, would feel comfortable towing a boat with it but just way too light of a truck to tow a travel trailer with. Not sure on MPG but I would assume it was pretty good.
Had the ecoboost, wasn't the slight bit impressed with it. Tons of power, but you are either Eco'ing (Grandpa driving) or boosting. And when you are boosting, you are only seeing 10-13 mpg and you better believe you are boosting the second any kind of trailer is attached to that ball.

I see you are a ford guy and understand. I really, REALLY like my 2022 half ton z71 baby duramax https://texashuntingforum.com/forum...-2022-half-ton-chevy-duramax#Post8660646
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Well there was more to MY truck that I hated.... like the hot transmission when towing, the 4 throttle bodies it went through, the constant misfire it had in cyl 3, the fact that these turbo motor CHEW through spark plugs, the white smoke it threw out of the exhaust on start up that was "Normal" according to any dealership it was taken too, and the fact that the ecoboost motors needed a weep hole in the radiator or a catch can. Lots of problems with the first gen 3.5 ecoboost motors and my truck had most of them.
