I have a Winchester Model 101 O/U shotgun that gets a much more use on sporting clays courses than field work. I am considering having the barrels ported and tapering cones lengthened to reduce barrel climb and recoil.

Pros and cons on this?

No pros to porting on a shotgun. The extended cones MAY marginally improve patterns and marginally decrease felt recoil…maybe. Money would be better spent on classes with a top level coach.

I have them on my Benelli Ethos Sorting gun. The ports look good but for the amount of crud they collect and time consuming to clean. Not sure I get anything else from them.

Love those new maple stocked 101's !!

Reducing muzzle jump for doubles is about the only + to porting. It does increase the noise level in case you feel the next skeet shooter is standing too close!

The best way to reduce recoil with a shotgun is one that fits exactly to you. If you intend to make it exclusively a clay gun, I would spend the money and have stock work done to have it be custom fit. Having a shotgun fired correctly also improves your clay shooting ability.

Save your money and use it for shells and lessons and gun fitting. The modifications are iffy at best.

I have permanent hearing damage (and tinnitus) in my left ear as a result of a guy in the duck blind with a ported shotgun. Was a Mossberg with the ports halfway down the barrel. Had no idea he brought a ported gun until he torched one off with the ports about 12” away from my ear.

I couldn’t tell that they did anything for recoil control. Just made it noisy.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Never heard of ports halfway down a barrel. Strange.

Porting is a waste of money...don't do it.

Lengthening the forcing cones is a better investment...but you must pattern test before and after the work to see if it improves your patterns.

May have been more like 3/4 of the way down the barrel. Has been about 15 years, so I could be remembering incorrectly.
