What a pain, had one crack and snap. Talked to TXLEFTY and he was sure I could handle the job since I work on pumps and such for a living. Ran the engine for about a minute backing the truck into position. Went to disassemble everything and snapped off the other bolt on the same port. I was nervous to begin with as I’ve never extracted a bolt from an engine, only pump motors (cost me $150 max if I screw up) so I start the drilling process on the original broken bolt. I have put 1,000 miles on the truck since it broke, not hard to tell which one it is(top left first photo) I fight a little but am able to remove it, awesome! I’m thinking this is normal work but not that hard. So I move onto the second one and start drilling, the bit catches and starts threading the broken bolt inward, I reverse and it makes a quarter turn and stops. I pound an extractor in, it won’t bite. Try over and over and eventually I cross the threading inside the cylinder head This is why I was worried to begin with. Should have just taken it to a shop and paid the $500. Talk to John and he convinces me I can still do it, but I need the right tools. He was very kind to send me his personal extractor set, and was willing to send other expensive tools as well. I purchased a right angle drill, which I was told I was crazy for attempting this without one Fast forward two weeks and my drill comes in and I’ve got Johns extractor set. Disassemble again and start going to work, it is not going my way. Discuss with John again as I’m thinking of giving up. I’m thinking I’m gonna have to drill out and retap, he suggested possibly even a helicoil. I cool off and decide to try a smaller bit and go at a different angle since I’ve already started to shave the wall of the original bolt hole. A minute of drilling and then pounding an extractor as hard as I could with a hammer in the 2” of work area, It felt tight. Put a wrench on it and a slow tap with my palm got it to break. Then a crazy tornado type extraction as it was far from straight, but it worked. Gotta get me one of these particular extractor sets. Big thanks to TXLEFTY, his knowledge, his extractor set, and convincing me to keep trying made it happen. Would I do it again? Yes, now that I have the experience and tools! If I wasn’t in some type of a mechanic field or didn’t work on stuff regularly, you better have a sh!t load of patience otherwise pay the man! It’s not the toughest job in the world, but isn’t the easiest in your driveway, even with the right tools. Luckily the threads were okay, put everything back together and started the truck. Sounds like it should, drove it for 25-30 miles to see if anything changed. Let it cool, checked the bolts again, all was good! The wife now thinks she can go buy something since I didn’t have to spend as much

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Good job! Was there much blood loss? Sorry, not your lucky day! One busted knuckle a couple weeks ago breaking the manifold to pipe flange bolts loose.

John is a wealth of knowledge and he will help anyone. Just do not mention short bed trucks or .40S&W Great to see you got this worked out.

I’ve got a warped exhaust manifold, it’s only an issue when I hit high numbers on the engine break, so I’m just going to let it ride & whistle for a while. I’m in no place to be without my truck for a few days within tue next 3-4 months.

Every 20 minute job is one (or two) broken bolts away from a 3 day nightmare
Good on you for keeping at it, I've been doing similar stuff for years and broken off bolts still give me nightmares

Way to stay with it rickym and you did well to back off and give it a rest. Drilling out broken bolts and studs can really test your patience. And once agin, TEXASLEFTY came to the rescue. Just out of curiosity, what is the name of the extractor set?

You got more patience than me. I would have driven to the local machine shop and thrown $100 bills at it until it was fixed. (unless John found out about it and then he'd force me down same path as you...)

I’ve got a few different sets and that one works really good, I never look forward to removing the exhaust on any engine but I make sure I have enough tools to fix the boo boo’s. We made the mistake of pulling the manifold off a CAT deep in the woods and I had nightmares for 6 months after that one. Good job Tricky Ricky keeping after it I bet you don’t want to do that again for a few days

Thanks. I have never seen that one before. I like that they include the correct drill bits and the guides to put over bolts to help start drilling in the center of a bolt that still has some sticking out. I made a set of them when I worked in a machine shop, but mine were not hardened and you could wallow them out. I built a second set that was only used with a long center drill and it worked really good. I miss access to a lathe and Bridgeport Mill.

Took 3 out of a ranching buddy's Ram years ago with my welder and heavy duty 3/8" nut's. Took me 3 tries on one as it was broken below surface. Got a case of Budweiser for the job. This process works great on sheared bolts.
