I have a blank AR receiver that I haven’t decided whether to build a rifle or pistol. After the completed build, do I need to fill out a new 4473 form stating the actual configuration?

Didn't you fill out a 4473 when you bought the lower? Or was it an 80% that you had to finish machining?

if not an 80%, as Mac stated, its designation should already be made per the 4473 at point of purchase / receipt of goods. If purchased as a stripped lower or complete lower with no upper ever being attached, should have been processed as "other".

It was processed as “other”. So no other designation is needed after completing a build?

It was processed as “other”. So no other designation is needed after completing a build? No, not to the ATF anyway. That answer is based upon a pistol or rifle...completely different hoops if you plan on making it a short barreled rifle (SBR) but I suspect you know that.

If you build a pistol from a receiver, be able to prove it was ALWAYS a pistol.

Don't suppose a man's word is good enough for the ATF. After all when you get shorter than a 16" barrel, it makes for an even more lethal weapon...
