Good evening. Looking for any practical advice on hog trap mechanisms. Nothing fancy, looking at swinging one way gates or guillotine style door. Not real excited about trapping 10 at a time, but we have to start somewhere. Brought home several 1 1/4” fire sprinkler pipes from work that were going to get scrapped. I also have hog panel, just curious about the trap part. Do the hogs consistently push their way through a swinging door or do they get wise to it sooner? We aren’t at the place full time but almost every weekend when the weather cools off. Appreciate it.

Buying a simple box trap is the best way to get started. And, as far as the "pushing their way through", after a door has been triggered - I've never experienced it, I don't think, and everything I've seen has said maybe 1% of the pigs in the area will push their way in. (Parks and wildlife folks in a few different states.) I've seen "rooter" only doors as the primary way to catch a pig. I don't think they work. Youtube is your friend on this, although, there's a lot of goobers you have to wade through. The boys Down Under have some very good tips. I'm learning, just like you are.

We have both guillotine door and a saloon door. I much prefer the guillotine door. Also, make the trap big. When you catch some, walk to the back of the trap so they gather close to the door, then shoot them.

I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Tractor Supply trap. Rooter doors x 3. Pour 3/4 bag of corn in front of doors and pour the rest inside the trap. Catch pigs every time I set it. Usually get 4 or 5 at a time. The most was 15. 11 small with 4 big ones.

Thanks y’all. That’s some good practical advice. Especially about not blocking the doors or not having to crawl into the trap to get them out! Those tractor supply rooter doors look like they would be pretty easy to install on a box trap as well.
