Whats wrong with Winchester Model 70? It’s an old fashion Mauser action so it’s not tactical. Funny how the Mauser control feed was considered the pinnacle of hunting actions not that long ago. I still love them.

thanks for all the insight. i knew not to many people would have much on the Franchi, and had seen the issues about Savages weak extractor but wanted a wider test audience which you guys thankfully provided. so i am re-assessing my options. Tikka and Weatherby were both on my original radar and with info i will prob lean back toward the Tikka Opinions are like Aholes everyone’s got one, but the guys that make custom toilet paper for sensitive aholes are the ones I’d ask. #1sensitive ahole/custom toilet paper guy on this thread is FiremanJG. Just PM him so no bodies feelings get hurt about shrimper looking rifles. So, you are saying that Jason is an a$$wipe?

Whats wrong with Winchester Model 70? Not a thing, I love em'. My first deer rifle was a Model 70 and absolutely loved that gun, until a "friend" stole it.

Write in vote for one of my favorites. Ruger 77 Hawkeye. Ruger really disappointed me with the direction they took with the M77. Put all their efforts into the American and not the Hawkeye can only be had in a few calibers in select models. The M77 was one of my all time favorite hunting rifles in its heyday

I am not super big on the vanguards but they are shooters and are available in tons of calibers and options. The Howa actions are very strong and it’s a good rifle. I’m big on the Mark V. Super strong action, 54 degree bolt lift, not light guns but dammit they feel like a real rifle. I love both of mine, especially my ultralight weight. If you can spring for a Mark V, do it. And put good glass on it

I’m not sure why but those 2 will easily snap over the case head.

If a Savage somehow show .00 groups from 1000
I swear to God I wouldn’t own it
Why would I ever own something I am ashamed to look at?
They don’t even try to make them look decent, makes me sick
I said what I said

But you can't top load a control round feed, that's why I don't care for them. So much for that being "fake news". I would also suggest Model 70 owners not use brute force to overcome the design clearances in the bolt of a Model 70. It only takes a second or two to push a round into the top of the magazine so the bolt and extractor can secure it before it enters the chamber. It's the unique sound of the round being snapped into place that you won't hear with a push feed. Not doubt it was returning soldier familiarity with the controlled feed that led Winchester into keeping it in their post-WWII Model 70's. However, in peacetime settings where reliability in extracting a round is not paramount, I don't see where it offers any advantages over a push feed.

LOL, Here come the Tikka fan boy/Savage haters.
Of those two, I'd go with the Savage hands down. I own a bunch of Savage rifles and they just flat out shoot, my oldest go-to deer rifle is an old Savage 110 in 243 that I bought used 27 yrs ago. I have never had any trouble out of any of them, ever.....but all of mine are hunting rifles, I don't run them hard on the range like JG does putting thousands of rounds through them a year.
I've got a Tikka in the safe, nothing special. It just sits there.
I've always wanted a Winchester Supergrade, but that's $$. Can't beat a Savage for the price point. Savage and Mossberg are nowhere near the same ballpark. No brand loyalty here I stand by, Tikka, Bergara and X Bolt for a decent price point, proven winners, can’t really screw it up, and they tried to not have something not hideous Pick your caliber from there

Tikka made a lot of hay when they were $200-300 cheaper. They've corrected that. They are still great rifles but they're no longer the bargain they once were.

They were basic no frills rifles with black plastic ugly stocks and blueing. New ones add nicer looking stock, camo, cerekote, threaded muzzles. They did a good job of reacting to the market.

No matter which model Tikka you get, they are still one of the most accurate, least picky, and reliable out of the box rifles you can buy, at any price.

There is not a Tikka in my safe, but I agree with that. I've yet to see one that didn't shoot out of the box. I'm a buy once, cry once person and like custom rifles. However, if I have any friends that are new to shooting or asking about just a deer rifle I point them towards a Tikka.

They also just increased existing designs. I got my first stainless CTR for $850. They're now like $1100 for a stainless. No difference in anything really except they adjusted price. And this was before covid, so it's got nothing to do with recent inflation or supply chain. Still a bargain for their performance but I probably never would have got into Tikka at today's prices.

Regardless the rifle you pick if it is intended to be used primarily for Whitetail deer (at distances less than 300 yds) you might consider the 7mm-08 unless you have a good reason for wanting .308
