We have a very small gas leak on the line that feeds into the cook top. It's on the inlet side because it's still there when the valve is off. Have checked it with soapy water and it's right where the 90 comes into the valve on the right side. House about 10 years old. Looks like the pipe dope gave way.

What I can't figure out is how to get this valve off so it can be fixed. It looks like this whole section was put together and then connected behind the wall afterwards.

Propane is shut off to the house so all is good for now. Would like to fix myself but not even sure how a plumber is going to fix this one without ripping out cabinets.

I'm no plumbing expert so there may be a simple way to fix this. These are all threaded connections. What am I missing?

This is inside a cabinet right next to the cook top. That shelf underneath the valve does come out to give more room to work.

Rough in guy fixed ya up for sure. No excuse for that.

It will need to be shutoff cut with a saw and stripped back to stubs coming out of wall. Then reinstalled with several ells, nipples and a union. No need to demo anything.

I agree^ some jack wagon put you in a bind by not putting a service union in the line.
How ever you just need to cut, thread the existing nipple, add a union, closed nipple into your existing elbow..

The man has been called. This is above my skill level, especially with gas involved.

Just glad you guys confirmed that I wasn't crazy.

Whoever did that needs to be punched square in the nose for that! One of the pipes will need to be cut like said and then a Union or maybe after the shut off valve maybe a nipple with flex going to the range top.

I had to go look at mine to see how it was done and make sure it wasn’t that way and I’m good.

Cut it and use a shark bite union on the cut ends. Install a new valve with threaded unions.

If that was mine, I would saw the leaking ell at the valve. Unscrew the cut off ell, the valve and the other ell. Put it all back together with proper coupling, nipple, ells and union.
You could also remove the rectangular piece of wood. There may be a union behind there.

I hope you aren't a plumber. SB's are only meant for potable water and even that is questioned by professionals. You mess this up and it can kill someone.

The man hasn't called me back yet. That's actually a good idea. Cut it in the front and unscrew. Might go that way.

That's nothing for a good plumber. Call one. It hurts but sometimes you just gotta do it.

The first man came out yesterday. Wanted to tear out sheetrock from the back side. I gave him macec3's suggestion and then another option (could actually go through the cabinet and directly into the cooktop. He agreed both of those would work. Went to his truck to work up a price. $1100!!!! I asked how long it was going to take and he said about an hour and a half. Didn't know plumbers were getting $500/hr now. I told him no thanks.

Man #2 coming on Monday.

That seems like the I really don't want to do this price so let's see if this guy will bite.

I have said before to heck with college....become a plumber. lol

I feel your pain. I had a plumber out yesterday. An 1 hours work was $550.00 A quote on some future work putting in a tankless water heater($6500.00) and replacing an outdoor faucet($425.00). I have a very good relationship with these people. Over the last seven years I have probably spent $15-20k with them. Yesterdays bill and future work quote kind of chapped my hide. Going to shop around.

Yeah if this guy Monday is more than $3-400 bucks it's gonna become a DIY project.

It's less than 2 hours work and probably $40-50 in parts.

They are probably charging what the market will bear.

If you think a professional is expensive, just see how much an amateur will cost.

Exactly. Plus they carry the insurance that if something happens, they (and you) are covered.
