Thankful drivers... years ago people would give a friendly wave for letting them merge into traffic and on to the roadway. Now they would rather speed up and not let you merge or block the road.

Driving thru the town I grew up in last week. I asked my wife if she ever noticed that there were never any kids playing outside. We were always outside when we were kids. Neighborhood kids were always playing together at something..... or fighting about something. But we were outside. We were always outside playing, as we didn't have air-conditioning back in the day. It was cooler outside than it was in the house most of the summer. One other thing you don't see or hear about much is Whole House Attic Fans. If it wasn't raining, we had ours on every night in summer with the windows open.

We have 2 fairly large ponds across the road from the house, so I see the toads, and turtles and other things all the time. I don't see owls in our back yard anymore. There was a dairy farm behind us when I was a kid and we ALWAYS had owls. I may see one every few years now, but that's it. We had a HUGE red ant pile in the back yard when my parents bought the house in 1979. By 1980, my father had poured enough stuff on it that it was dead. Fire ants we had something like 44 mounds in 2004 or 2006 after all the floods. I boiled water and poured it down every mound I could find; took over 8 hours...I had 4 pots on my stove constantly going. Nightmare, but it worked...only had a few left and we've gotten rid of those without poison. Yeah, the grass around the mound was dead for the year, but oh well.
Never see a manual car anymore. Rarely see people eating at a restaurant without a phone in their hands. The old manual credit card imprint thingamabobs that stores used to make a copy of your card. We had one at my old store for when the phone lines were down, but that's been over 20 years ago now.

My parents never had AC until after I moved out! We still have a whole house attic fan, but covered the vent in the hallway with Sheetrock a dozen years ago. We were loosing too much heated and cooled air through the vents. It definitely helped our electric bill.

Fire flies. I used to see them growing up in Grayson county 30 years ago, but it’s been close to that long since I’ve seen one.

Fire flies. I used to see them growing up in Grayson county 30 years ago, but it’s been close to that long since I’ve seen one. Come to Deep East Texas. We are running about 30 yrs. behind the times. Still have plenty of fire flies here. Quail are pretty much gone. No native Red Ants, just fire ants. Not as many Road Runners as there used to be. Feral Hogs have taken over everything here.

Store clerks who can do math in their heads. All the kids playing outside unsupervised in big groups of different ages. Dodgeball. Robins in the winter time. Low gas prices. Native Texans(seems like).

Store clerks who can do math in their heads. . . .
Nobody can do math in their head anymore Not even bank tellers. They all have bill counting machines on their desks. Nobody can give change correctly. Example-giving five dimes instead of 2 quarters when your drawer is full of quarters, or five ones instead of a five dollar bill. Nobody knows how to sack groceries correctly. Bread always by itself. Cold things together. Cans double bagged with other cans instead of on top of your twinkies. No non-edible things like bugspray or oven cleaner bagged with food items. Potential blood leaking things like raw poultry and cuts of meat bagged by themselves. Etc. Etc.
