I can’t imagine how they crushed that tube without driving over it or literally going after it with a hammer.

Our local USPS skill is stealing checks and "washing" them(not sure how that process works). So they're a multi talented organization.

I like this idea. Where are you finding boxes big enough? I have three rifles to ship and am struggling finding boxes long enough.

I believe ‘Dallas’ and ‘only’ are right about the tube…I only thought about the strength, not the problems something that can roll could cause.
I think it’s highly possible it rolled off a truck or fork lift and was then ran over…..heck, they didn’t even return the missing 6” of the tube, just packed it all in a priority box of some sort and sent it back.

Busted Sch 80 PVC.....Wow! They would have to work hard to do that.

I returned one in a small concrete form tube with lots of packing once and it made it.

I filed a claim and received a letter denying it, claiming it was illegal for me to ship a handgun or gun that could be concealed.
I answered their letter saying it is a rifle, 24” and 8lb. so not concealable and included a printed page from the ATF site proving it’s legal for me to ship…..now waiting again.

Use USPS at your own risk.

That sounds like the initial denial letter from the USPS claims office that I received a few years ago. It had the same wording about a gun that could be concealed. Mine was a Winchester Model 75, ~42 inches long, 8-1/2 pounds. I guessed that they initially deny all firearms claims on those grounds rather than do the research to determine the size.

I met with the local postmaster and got her recommendation on how to appeal the denial. I thought that dealing with a local Texan rather than someone over the phone would be easier and I was right. She actually wrote a letter for me saying that it was a mailable firearm and that the damages should be paid. I wrote a letter to the claims office and attached her letter plus a repair estimate from my gunsmith (which exceeded the value). A couple weeks later I got a check for the full insured value.

My parents both worked for USPS. I've had mostly terrible experiences with them. Cost me $300 a couple years ago when they just lost my property taxes I mailed to the county and they were then considered late and I had to pay interest. I've had them lose packages and other things of course.

My dad was a postmaster and used to tell me they were 99.9% on their deliveries. I asked how they calculated that and he said they used reports given to postmasters. I said I never spoke to a postmaster about my letter not delivered, so how many millions of others were the same?

I've had tons of other stuff destroyed or worse.

Bear in mind USPS does not insure the packages, an outside company does. That's why they don't give a crap if you have a claim and if it's paid or not.

Pass the gravy.

After having two checks go missing that the wife mailed to the water company at the farm I told the her to just abbreviate the company name instead of spelling it out. In the three years since she started doing this, knock on wood, no more check have been lost.

Lots of shenanigans go on with employees of government entities. We've had attempts to steal our identities after visiting TXDMV in Boerne and USDA/FSA office in Junction. 'Seems if there's a SSN involved, someone just can't resist. realmad 'Wonder how many numbers get sold out the back door of the IRS?

A laughable update: After sending the letter explaining that a Ruger 10/22 is NOT a handgun or capable of being concealed I received a second denial letter, this time explaining that my ‘Proof of Value’ was not sufficient….Their website specifically says “statement of value by the manufacturer” so I used their ads showing price figuring that would suffice, silly me. The invoice copies are now on the way….in the mean time, although they denied me a second time, I received a letter saying I had to take the gun to the local post office so they could inspect the packaging and contents for damage. Once there, the Postmaster said she wasn’t capable of inspecting for damage and must ship it off to some other department. So now, 100+ days since initial shipping, my gun is on its way to who knows where……

And, Cass, I took your advice and went to see the local Postmaster for a helpful note last week, she refused to give me anything along those lines.

I never buy insurance when I ship things. I firmly believe they try every trick in the book to deny paying a claim and make the process as difficult as possible. I would be surprised if more than ten percent of the people that file a claim ever see a dime.

I mailed a rifle to Remington. No problem. They mailed it back after repairs. No problem.

102, point is that I have had zero problem with shipping guns via US Mail. The time I mentioned is only one of the times I’ve shipped and/or received guns via the mail. Never messed with FedEx or any of the other shipping companies.

I know some of you old goats are retired so this doesn't apply to all. At work, we ship millions of dollars worth of machine parts to US and Canada. We have UPS and FedEx accounts and anything over $2500, we insure. We have had to make claims and they are paid. If you need to ship valuables, consider using your workplace account and get insurance. I've only done it twice but I can only imagine a shipper with an account that has a daily stop has a little more clout than an individual.

Old goat Chris, it breaks my heart to say it but it might be time to cut your losses and write off USPS. It's little ole you vs a giant, federally backed organization that doesn't give a F anymore because they are propped up by Uncle Sam and can't fail. Customer satisfaction is non-existent.

I know one thing, after the beating you are taking over this, if we ever secede, I'm nominating you for our new and improved Post Master General. I think you now have a passion to see it done right.
