Hi there,
1.Have always enjoyed hunting forums, I was watching YouTube and seen a lot of videos from guys in Texas, so just googled Texas hunting forums and here I am.
2. Seems fairly straight forward to post pics, just followed my nose.
3. Australia varies greatly, I’m in North Queensland. Well away from the big cities, Brisbane the capital city of Queensland is over 800 miles away from where I live. I haven’t been to Texas so can’t really compare the two. Most of our industry is either mining or cattle. Our cattle stations (ranches) mostly are 100000 acres plus, mainly gather cattle on motorbikes and helicopters. I hunt with a team of 1-4 dogs. I don’t have bay dogs and catch dogs. Most people I have hunted with are the same in that we only have dogs that catch. My style of hunting is Ute finding, I drive the large cattle stations around swamps and creeks, the dogs stand in the back of the Ute wind scenting and jump off when they scent pigs. I mainly like to hunt at night, mainly because it’s not as hot for the dogs.

Haha thanks mate.
Our gun laws make it very hard to get the correct licences that allow us to have silencers or semi-automatic weapons. Even to get a pistol licence is very difficult. Unfortunately it’s only getting worse in that regard.
Thermals seem to be getting popular now, I don’t have one yet, I prefer to rely on the dogs finding the pigs wind scenting. I rarely shoot, I carry a rifle just to shoot dingoes/wild dogs whenever I come across one.

Kangaroos are very common where I am, I see 10-15 everyday driving to work. On the open downs country to the west of where I am they can be in plague numbers. Not uncommon to see mobs of over 100. They are real pests in drought, competing with cattle for any grass.

Yeah I’ve heard they try promote fosters as the Australian beer, I honestly don’t know anyone who drinks it.
Kangaroos can be hunted. You have to apply to get tags through the wildlife management harvesting department. They are sold to processing plants and sold as game meat to overseas markets. There is a small market in Australia for kangaroo meat, but it’s not something I prefer to eat.

Dog hanging up is a wild dog/dingo, we were setting a ground trap one afternoon, looked up the road and he was trotting in towards us about 400m away. Got right in to 100m before I shot him. Big old dog.

10 acres without house or shed around $180,000, that’s where I am. 10 acres on farming land more likely to be $300,000.

Yes there are a lot of rabbits here. Not something I’ve ever set out to hunt, have shot my fair share though. I have eaten them in a couple of different ways, but I didn’t really like them.

One of my best friends lives in Toowoomba now, don't think he gets to do any hunting though. Do you use Enfields a lot down there? I remember seeing an Australian hog hunting video with the guys mostly using SKSs, what about those?

There are good red deer populations not too far from Toowoomba.
I’m not much a gun man, I don’t know what Enfields are sorry, most people I hunt with usually have a Remington, Ruger or Winchester brand rifle. It’s very hard to get a licence to have semi auto rifles here.

Hey Mad Dog... If you like forums I assume you are a member on www.australianhunting.net? I've been on that forum for years BSing with the guys about Texas hunting (I'm TexasDave on that site). Thanks for coming over here and sharing a bit. THF'ers.. you might want to check their forum out. Interesting to see hunting though their eyes. Plus you can cuss and they have a very much used middle finger emoji.

I mainly like to hunt at night, mainly because it’s not as hot for the dogs. mate. I've worked with some cool Aussie's in the oil & gas field. My old boss's son is a roo shooter there and I was getting all set up to go hunting with him when covid hit and ruined all of those plans. My old boss (Aussie as hell) loves to travel with his boat and catch barramundie's in certain rivers there, but his favorite type of lures were stupid expensive for him to get and hard to find....so I hooked him up with a bunch from the states at a way cheaper price, hope he's been catching them.... I have a friend that is a hard core pig dogger that I used to hunt with, he's spent some time hunting pigs in Australia too and loved it. For many years he has been breeding pig dogs that fall in line with the way you guys hunt. The whole "let one out" philosophy, I had 5 of his dogs. No bay dogs or catch dogs, they are finder/holders and are quiet/fast/strong. It's amazing watching those hairy dogs work. A good hairy dog is a freakin warrior on pigs, as I'm sure you know. Thanks for coming aboard.

Got this rank boar about 4 weeks ago. Caught him 800m away in some nasty country. He gave my dog a real working over and cost me $1500 at the vet. Dogs still recovering, but will be fins in a few more weeks.

And how common are Abarijinese, I have no clue how to spell that 'Aborigine' I think is what you were after. Referring to the indigenous people, though that term is not generally used in Australia because it carries certain racist connotations from the colonial past. Not unlike our Native Americans being called in the past 'Indians'. Aboriginal people would be more correct and accepted. When not used with with a capital 'A' could be used to describe any indigenous people anywhere since it simply means (original inhabitants).

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the pictures and information. Very interesting. We have family in Melbourne, but they don't hunt.

THF'ers.. you might want to check their forum out. Interesting to see hunting though their eyes. Plus you can cuss and they have a very much used middle finger emoji. Australians are too cool. I have never met one that I did not like. Welcome Mad Dog and thanks for sharing. I have enjoyed this thread!!

Very cool thread. Y'all got some big pigs out there! Your gun laws are crazy! If the government tried to impose that on us, I'm afraid there would be a 2nd revolution or civil war.

It’s only getting worse here. Just last week a friend of mine had his guns siezed. About 2 months ago he got into a wrestle at a bar, and had to pay a public nuisance fine. No court case, no conviction, no priors, and they used the public nuisance fine as justification for taking his guns. He can fight to get them back, and he is going to, but going to cost him time and money. Absolute [censored] show.

I went to Australia on R&R when I was in Viet Nam. I chose not to stay in Sydney and was invited to a small town in the country by a member of the (Australian-American Friendship Association ?) I stayed at his house, at his parents' farm, and at a friend's house. They fed me, bought me drinks, everything; I never spent a penny. We hunted kangaroo at night, driving through fields in a pickup truck, guys shooting from the back, over the cab and out the sides. It was crazy, dangerous fun. We shot birds that looked like mourning doves, but the size of pigeons. We hunted boars one day, but never saw any. Warm, wonderful, friendly people!

How long have you all had feral hogs? Those look very much more like ferals than Eurasian blood lines, head shape.

Great post MDH, welcome to the forum Interesting looking dogs, that brindle one looks like he has some mountain cur in him. We've used a few when we ran dogs years ago, dang good nose on them and we actually used them in a very similar way. Have you ever owned any Black Mouth Curs?

Hey Mad Dog,
Thank you for this thread! Do most of the boars over there have the long cutters or are you just posting the exceptional ones??
JR It is an age thing. Boar cutters usually don't become very noticeable until well after 2 years of age. They erupt much sooner, but it isn't until about 14 months of age that you can use them to distinguish between males and females. After they erupt and become sexually diagnostic, it can take them a couple of years to get very long, So when you see a boar with longer cutters, you know he is an older individual, probably at least 3 years of age, but aside from eruption, there is no exact aging based on cutter length, only generalities. I have aged boars in the past that tooth wear along the cheek teeth indicated the hog was around 2 years of age, but his cutters, unbroken, were less than an inch long. So my guess is that he is just showing us some really nice hog kills of his.

........ Aussies are a lot like Texans. I’ve known several. Having lived in Australia and having relatives in Texas, I have to agree with this statement. Especially the folks out on the land. (And I guess the city people are alike too)
