I’m sure there are several of these threads already I’m just to lazy to search them out. Always been a lever action shooter but finally broke down and picked one of these up.
First on the list is new trigger. I cannot spend same price on a trigger assembly as the rifle so looking at the Ruger BX trigger. Anyone that has experience with this one that will review or advise? Does it truly reduce pull by half?
Also what are other upgrades that will improve function with reasonable cost? I know this is different for everyone but I’ll never shoot competitively and I don’t ever use a caliper on my groups. Just want a smooth functioning plinker.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

trigger makes a huge difference. If you dont want to spend the 75 for the bx trigger there are several trigger kits out there too. Ive had similar luck on reducing pull just using those.

There is a market for unmolested factory trigger groups, so you can recover about half the cost of the BX ($80) if you choose. I only have one BX, and it was an improvement over the stock trigger, but in my case it wasn't by half, more like a 25% improvement.
If you are not intimidated by taking apart the trigger group, the target hammer from Volquartsen does a good job of reducing the factory pull. KIDD and Tandemkross also offer trigger improvement kits. I have about 8 or 10 with the VQ hammer and they are at least as much improved as the BX, some a bit more so.
IF you have any ejection problems, there are after-market sears which will usually solve those, but I wouldn't spend the money unless you have problems.

Spend a few bucks on an extended mag release , grand power made this one, I love it. You can easily drop mags with your middle finger and keep your trigger hand in place on the gun.

A custom barrel can make a world of difference, especially if you want to reach out past 50-60 yards. Green Mountain has a pretty good reputation for their price point.

Send the trigger to Brimstone Gunsmithing. They have 3 tiers and I can only imagine what 1 and 2 are like. I got 3 and it's great. If you watch a bunch of youtube videos on it, you could do it yourself. I did one and the improvement is really worth it. Check out Rimfire Central.

Not sure. I had a stock 10/22 for about a week before i upgraded everything on it. Only thing stock on mine is the action and receiver. Biggest noticeable upgrade was barrel to Tactical Solutions model.

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.
My first impulse was and is to hone/polish the trigger and hammer myself, not only to save the money but I enjoy doing this kind of thing. The concern being I could create an unsafe situation if overdone. So a manufacturer made drop in assembly might be worth the money.
Thanks again, all advice appreciated.

Thanks again, all advice appreciated. Many parts like you’re describing are just surface heat treated these days so I stopped honing trigger parts years ago.

Yeah that pretty much disqualifies doing it myself then.
Thanks

I would think you should be safe just polishing everything, if you start with a 1000 grit wet sand and move up to 3000 you really shouldnt move much material

I have a trigger group for a 10/22 that will go full auto with no warning. Has done it numerous times. I replaced it with either a Kidde or a Volquartsen, don’t remember which.

The hammer and the springs make the most difference in the feel. Aftermarket sear is not needed. No cutting or polishing needed if you put the Volquartsen hammer and bushings in it. I put the Volq parts in an older NOS metal trigger housing I bought, stripped, sanded, and polished.
Pass the gravy.

Thanks again for all the advice. Took it out yesterday and ran several magazines through it. All functions are good, only had 1 type of ammo so will take some different next time to make sure it’s all good. So for now the trigger is the only must have. Probably be at least a couple weeks before I get around to it. And I’m sure sooner or later some of the other suggestions here will seem like “must haves”.
Thanks again.

For ammo, the CCI SV (standard velocity) seems to be the overall best in it’s price range for most shooters and everyday plinking.

CCI standard is very good, and so is Norma tac-22. Both very reasonably priced.

Another vote for Brimstone. I tried the BX trigger and it was barely an upgrade over factory. Brimstone was light years better.
Green Mountain barrels should also be on your list
I run factory most everything else, but those 2 are must-haves for me.

I picked up a great 10-22, heavier stock and 22" barrel. I'm considering the Kidd trigger kit to make this great .22 even better. The install video is well done and looks like a pretty quick job. The kit is like $125.00, the complete drop in is $280.00, more than I paid for the rifle.

I had done a quick look at Brimstone website to check price of trigger work but didn’t see it so thanks for posting that. If still current it sounds reasonable.

I got Tier 3 and upgraded to a 2. If you're not that picky on triggers, the level 3 is very good. If you are super picky like me and hated both the factory 10/22 and BX triggers, the level 2 is what you want. I have no idea how the level 1 could be noticeably better than level 2.

"Effective 02/12/2022, Brimstone Gunsmithing will no longer be offering Ruger 10/22, Mini, or BX trigger work. This page will be left active for informational purposes. If you have an existing trigger order, rest assured that it will be processed as normal! It is with some regret that we will no longer be offering 10/22 trigger work. This trigger work is what started Brimstone, and what Brimstone Gunsmithing has largely been built on over the last 12 years. However, as times changed and the company has grown, it has become increasingly clear that modifying factory parts is not a repeatable or scalable operation. We are trying to guaranty the quality of the finished product, when the part we have received was an incredibly inexpensive, mass produced, and often used and abused, trigger assembly. This model does not set anyone up for success. As a result, we are focusing on new manufacture of our own parts; expect to see our own drop-in trigger kits soon. It's been a great run, and we have met some of the greatest people, while working on these 10/22 triggers. We deeply appreciate all our customers who have stuck with us and supported us over the last decade. And we look forward to working with you again over the next decade on new projects! " Looks like this is no longer an option.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.
