I have these codes for a check engine light, thankfully I haven’t been to a repair shop in years. What’s the better value , back to the dealer or a non affiliated mechanic shop ?

I was charged $89.99 for an oil change recently at a Hyundai dealership...and $25 to rotate the tires, $100 for the two air filters...all told $240. I had taken it in to get the window switch looked at since its under warranty. Made the stupid decision to let them change the oil, too. So, yeah, go to a good mechanic, not the dealership.

Just keep in mind the fact that dealers make a lot more on service than they do selling vehicles.

I only go to the dealer when Toyota sends me notice of a warranty issue. And even then they can try to tell you to bend over. Like the time I took my Tacoma to have the catalytic converter replaced. The notice that I received from Toyota Corporate was clear. The converter was defective and needed to be replaced. When I called to make an appointment, they told me my truck needed to be inspected to see if it needed replacement. Having been asked my dealerships to bend over before, I told the idiot the paperwork was clear, that the converter was defective and to schedule a time with the dealer to have it replaced. I recognized immediately the attempt to sell me unnecessary service work, which is exactly what another Toyota dealer did years ago when I responded to one of their timing belt replacement specials. It's a damn shame such good vehicles have such horrible service teams behind them. I feel for people who know nothing about the inner workings of vehicles and just bend over to write a check.

But the all-time winner goes to the local Firestone store that tried to sell me new rear shocks for $900 when all I wanted was new tires. Or course, it's important to keep in mind that I probably look like someone who wouldn't know a spark plug from a piston ring. When I looked at the quote, the guy had generated a cost estimate that included removing the rear axle to replace the shocks. No question his was a purposeful effort to inflate the labor charge for something that would later take me about 30 minutes to complete.

I honestly have never had a positive experience with a dealer for service work and I always get a least 10 years of service from my vehicles by using reputable service shops for the jobs I can't tackle myself. My oldest Toyota is the same 2010 Tacoma with over 185,000 miles and has never seen a dealer since the converter was replaced. I bought it as a replacement for my old '98 Tacoma that I sold with well over 250,000 miles on it. I don't believe that one ever saw a dealer's service bay.

There's a reason they call them stealerships.

I have a great local mechanic. I rarely have anything repaired by a dealer.

I have never used a dealer and have always been told they are extremely expensive.

Once upon a time a typical dealership did not have to sell a single car...the dealership would make a profit off of parts and service alone.

I don't know if that holds true now, but according to a buddy of mine that did 42 years in the car business it was kinda like the movie theater...it is not the movies that make the profit, it is the concessions.

I have not had anything but positive experiences with Christian Brothers Automotive. They have always done excellent work and will do whatever is needed to make it right if there is a problem. They are not the cheapest out there but are much less than a dealer. I would highly recommend them.

Crankshaft position sensor is easy to change yourself....and cheap. If it's outside of your abilities, pm TEXASLEFTY. He's good people and will do you right. He did right by me.

Yep, when I took my trucks to the Toyota dealer for the free oil changes they would pull the filters and show them to me. I always declined and said I can do it myself. I got to the point where I told them to write on the service order to not check air filters. Dealers have a list of services to peddle to people. I have family members that will ask me why I still do my own maintenance. 1. I know it is done right, 2. I spend more time driving to the dealer and waiting. 3. add the time I fix what they screw up, and 4. cost.

I go to a little place in the settlement called Clements auto. I don't trust many mechanics, but they do great work and have been more than fair with me.

I am biased being one of the highest trained GM techs in the South Central region going to work this morning at the same dealer I've worked for over 20 years. Two of the three techs we have are GM World Class Certified and there are some shops with 20 techs and no GMWCT's.

Some of the points being made differ by region. Here, our prices are not much more than the independents that have no clue what they are doing unless the vehicle is at least 10 years old. Oil changes are expensive and it's impossible to hire people to do them properly without over-paying, especially at the locally owned quick lube places here whose prices are the same or more than ours.

More than one person guessed on your repair need based on a code read by an aftermarket device stored in the ECM of a vehicle they have never inspected or remotely attempted diagnosing. That's hilarious right there.

There's nothing at all wrong with taking your vehicle to an indy. There are a couple capable indies around here too. Just remember, they call me when they get stumped. What a pleasure (sarcasm) it is to have another shop bring me a POS with 17 new aftermarket parts they tried to fix but made worse.

Pass the gravy.
