I have a couple Burris Fullfield ii’s and a Burris Droptine, all 4.5-14x42 that I get along really well with. I think the are very nice scopes for the money, if you’re wanting magnification with a smaller objective you may give them a look

The newer offering in HD, or older VX3? I really need to keep this one to a 40mm. I have the HD glass in the VX5HD, just not 100% the VX3HD is the same glass. That said, I've never had a Leupold that wasn't clear. I have the VX6, 3-18 x 50MM that they were putting out right before they started marketing them as HD. It is a fantastic scope. Good luck in your search.

Yeah, I agree. I have a Burris Signature HD I'm really happy with. For the $599 I may spend on the VX3HD, I'll take it for the greater light gathering over the Burris I have. I have a Burris Fullfield II on my .300 BO. It has held zero exceptionally well for about 10 years on an AR that sees a lot of rough use.

mine is about 6 years old, so I am guessing not the HD. I lived with the 40mm objective for 55+ years on several rifles, but I wanted more light gathering capability is why I moved to the 50mm objective and 30mm tube. It makes a whole world of difference to my older eyes. I still have a 4-12x40 Redfield on my 700 22-250 that works great except low light conditions. Similar with other brand scopes on a variety of other rifles (3-9x40 Burris with post on 30-06, 3-9x40 brand unsure 25-06 (one I want to upgrade), 4-12x40 Tasco 218 Bee to name a few)

Just asking a question. Yet you decide to come off with a really stupid and rather rude reply. Why would I have expected an intelligent and civil answer? By the way, more magnification doesn't make you a better shot nor does it make the rifle any more accurate. Time spent of the range shooting does and time spent hunting with the rifle also does. Something tells me, based on your reply, that you don't spend much time doing either.

You have a "nice" day.

Went with the VX3HD, 4.5-14 x 40, 1" tube. Mounted and bore sighted, on an EGW mount with Warne rings. I'm happy with the size and weight, no noticeable difference over the 9X Redfield I took off of it. As for clarity and light gathering, I can't tell the difference over the other HD's I have. This magnification range is great, 4.5 is low enough for most of my set ups, and the 14x will be plenty for the range and some of the longer shots. This rifle will ride in a soft case on the front rack of my ATV. Keeping the optic slim and light it's an easy in and out of the case. I'm in a really dusty environment and cant let anything ride uncovered. After I see how this shoots I'll decide where to put it in the line up, currently #4. [Linked Image]

My dad took it home, put it away and hasn't been out of his closet until he gave it to me. I want to hunt with this rifle and need more magnification. I'll be selling the scope once I learn a few things about it, information is scarce on Redfield. I'd like to hear from anyone that has experience with this rifle, we sighted it in with cheap ammo, and it shot great. The 18" barrel is great for handling and shooting, but I'm looking at some velocity loss. What shoots well for those that hunt with this rifle? [Linked Image]

I bought my little brother one in the late 70’s in .243.
It’s a great shooting gun and very durable.
I’ve been trying to buy it from him for years for my grandkids to hunt with but he will not part with it.

So I think I may be done working on this one. It shot good, then not so good, then great, then average on a few trips. I swapped out the original trigger for a Timney last year after getting this and upgrading scope and mount. Off season is a good time to get stuff like this done, so wanting to get it great all the time I opened up the barrel channel, which was not floated at all. In fact, there was the pressure point towards the front. I also found Heritage Arms, they make bottom METAL for these. I ordered Aluminum, they also have blued steel. Depending on the variation, you may have to shorten your action screws (and chamfer) to get this to work. I did, about 3-4 threads. Gonna shoot it here in a few days, I'll have a range day at lease with a few more and see if floating barrel and going to bottom metal torqued to 40" lbs gets it a consistent. [Linked Image]

I had one of those years ago. Shot very good and took quite a few deer with it. I said that it kills on both ends. What comes out the barrel and the damage to the shooters shoulder.

I just inherited one in .222, in his last few years it became my Dad`s numero uno rifle. He took pigs, deer, and even a turkey or two with it. His has a vent rib on it, I don`t have it here in Dallas, it is still in his safe in Beaumont. But, I am taking it on an axis/turkey/pig hunt in April and I should be able to post a picture or 2 then.

I have my fathers in .243 with the original 4x weaver scope on it.. Has always been a absolute tack driver...He bought it in 1974 at Gibsons for 139.00.. Still have the receipt..Ive been offered upwards of 1100 for it over the years at gun shows..I was going to switch scopes years ago but found it hard to find flush rings....The .308 is a great round for it...Have fun with that great gun!!

What a lightweight. Everyone knows that you have to use a Benji to check your barrel channel. laugh

Seriously though, that's a great looking rig and I bet it will shoot.

It's light and moves to a ready position in what is to me, a natural motion. Being a .308, I won't be looking for different ammo as I use this as a backup. I'm hoping it likes the same 165 gr. I shoot out of my Tikka CTR.

Fantastic rifle to say the least and I'm jealous it is not in my gun room!!

I'd leave the rifle and scope as it sits provided it shoots the way you like unless you plan on doing a lot of target shooting out past 200 yards. 3x9 redfield scope is plenty enough to get the job done and looks right on that little hammer

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I have owned many guns over the past forty something years but never a Mohawk. I now feel incomplete and less than I should be. That is one beautiful and handy little rifle.

This is the perfect front seat of the Ranger shoot a pig quick 18" barrel rifle. With the upgrades, I also wouldn't hesitate to take a shot a great buck several hundred yards out should the need arise.

Yup!

I've killed many deer out to 300 yards with 243 using handloaded 100gr sierra GKs. It is absolutely one of my favorite calibers for hunting TX along with 308!

That is exactly what I was thinking. We have a Mule and that would be one handy little rifle to cruise with.

I have this same rifle, I inherited it from my wife's grandfather. It was his truck gun as well.

I was going to ask the same question. I have 4 30-06s and all have 3x9s. One has a Redfield Widefield. Back in the day it was a great scope. I can understand wanting a better scope but a 3x9 is plenty on that gun. I prefer Leopolds for the money.

Well, I'm new to hunting and shooting. The manager of the gun counter at Academy told me I needed a better scope so I'm doing what he told me. So, how far does a 308 bullet go, and will 9 power let me see a big deer at that distance?
