Hey y’all, I’m honestly new to this sport and I can’t wait to get out there.
My question is where can I go out to hunt with my rifle (30.06) on public land?
I stay in Dallas but I am willing to travel around the Lone Star state.

Please help with any kind of info. Even willing to tag along just so I can learn will be great too.

I’m really interested on Whitetail at the moment.
Possibly Mule Deer even though I know they’re more harder to come by in my 100mile radius.

I’m down for hog hunting but I truly need to make sure I can do it with a 30.06 on that land.

I recommend booking a doe hunt with a ranch or outfitter in the section of this site. A good way to get good meat in the freezer without spending over a thousand dollars……make sure you spend lots of time at the target range before hunting so you are confident with the rifle to make fast clean kill shots on game….

Thank you. I might look into that. I actually got into the sport for the harvesting of an animal for my family and another reason to actually get away from city. I been working around firearms for almost 10years now but never really had someone to show me the ropes in the hunting spectrum.

Practice makes perfect so I’ve been hitting my local shooting range that’s actually outdoors so I can try to experience weather conditions as well.

Thank you again.

Hmmmm...I'm not sure I trust anyone named Beto...but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now. I know you can rifle hunt Caddo grasslands during deer season. I don't know if you can do the same for pigs in the offseason, but that may be a place to start looking.

Haha no sir. We got different first names and different views. Caddo grasslands is closer to me so I will add that to my list.

Go to TPWD'S website and sign up for the APH (annual public hunt) permit. for $45 you get access to areas all over Texas. They will mail you a book with all the details you need to go hunt anywhere anytime in Texas. It has maps and the rules and regulations on each species. You can also hunt most of the national forest with your rifle off of your hunting license. View often the public hunting section here. Lots of good info

good luck
