Has anyone ever used pelleted chicken feed in a protein deer feeder? 16% layer feed is cheaper than feed designed for deer.

I had a bag of 18% the chickens did not like the change of feed and brand so ended up feeding it to the deer out back. After a couple days they started cleaning it up

Will they eat it? Yes. Will it do what you want it to do? Probably not since the price I found online was for a 40# bag and it was $12.79 which equates to $15.99 for 50 lbs. It might work as an attractant but you would be better off relying on rainfall than feeding a high priced chicken feed to deer. I bought Purina Antler Advantage 20% deer pellets for $12.95 per 50lb bag yesterday. It has a mineral package developed for whitetail deer and not a chicken.

You may be on to something here. Just let us know if the bucks start bobbing their heads and clucking as they approach the feeder! I think I will stay with my deer protein & C/Seed.

You'd just be throwing your money away because there is no open season in Texas for deer eggs! wink

Perhaps a case where focusing on protein content might not be the best approach, in the big picture.

Wish I could find $12.95 Purina protein around here. Great price.

actually in cattle Urea is fed so they can manufacture proteins. I found an article of feeding Urea to sheep which should be more analogous to deer since they are both small ruminants.
