I find this interesting that Cheyenne does this for it's residents. They are a town of about 64,000 folks right on the cross roads of 2 interstates. Not considered a big town in Wyoming but one of our larger ones. Any Texas towns offer anything like it ? I haven't heard of anything like this before. https://laramielive.com/cheyenne-police-taking-applicants-for-citizens-police-academy-3/

We do it with the Citizens Watch Patrol (CWP) here in Idaho Falls. There is a Citizens Police Academy (required) which provides all the introduction and indoctrination to how the department works. The CWP is different from any Reserve Officer type program, people are all volunteers and NOT armed, and all the volunteers are used for traffic control, event staffing, and other labor intensive activities that would waste armed officers from being out where they need to be. The department figures the volunteers save about half a million dollars a year, just in labor costs, over using officers.
Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and Blackfoot P.D's used to have Reserve Officer programs back in the 70's and 80's, where you could do ride alongs, were armed, and received about 100 hours of Academy training. These were heavily monitored, high liability, and proved costly to insure. I think that Blackfoot is the only one that still does it, and believe they have a cap on how many there can be.
Bonnevile County Sheriffs Office has the Search and Rescue, and Sheriff's Jeep Patrol that is volunteers, and does roughly the same thing. Initial training, monthly meetings and service hours, and is available to augment regular staffing in emergencies.

Several towns on the North side of DFW have something like this.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

Just about every agency I know of offers this. We do at mine and once they graduate they become members of it and come help out on no refusal weekends. Obviously no LE work but the bring in food and drinks and offer to fix you a plate of food while your doing your report.
