Even though I have a soft heart when it comes to my Swift, the reality is it has limited uses and is kind of a safe queen because of this. When shooting prairie dogs in Western Kansas it is the first thing I grab. It makes it rain chunks with red rainbows. With a 243 you can shoot lighter bullets for thin skinned varmints or loaded with heavier bullets to harvest animal as large as Mule deer. So if you are looking for a multi-purpose cartridge go with a 243. If you are looking to add to your collection then the 22-250 Remington would be my choice as an addition.

220 Swift
1st choice - 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips at just over 3,800 fps
2nd choice is 36 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade at just over 4,300 fps

22-250 Remington is more prevalent than the Swift, ammo is easier to locate, and the difference of 200 fps (slower than the swift) whatever you shoot won't know the difference.
243 Winchester is even easier to locate ammo for than either of the other two. It is more versatile than any of the smaller cartridges. In my opinion it is the transitional cartridge between varmints and medium to large game. On more than one occasion I have witnessed a 243 Winchester drop a Mule Deer at distances of 350-400 yards, none of which have taken another step.

Sir, I will say 22-250 is not easier to locate than 220 swift and 243 isn't easy to locate either

220 swift is the easiest of those to get

To be honest, if you look at the current manufacturers that offer rifles in those three chamberings you will see, in that order the popularity of each. There are far more makers today making 243's with the 22-250 falling second and the 220 Swift hanging on to third. The proof is in the makers offerings. And if you reload, then it is a moot point. smile

Overall I have most likely killed more coyotes with a 270 than any other round. I only owned two centerfire rifles in my younger days (until I was 35 or so) a 270 and a 30-06. I shot the 270 out on jackrabbits and coyotes. Very effective.

If I wanted to build a 243 specifically for about 55 grain varmint rounds, what twist would be best?

No doubt a 270 will work, it will also kill a moose

Just a quick calculation:
Nosler 24055 (.243) Ballistic Tip 55 grain (bullet length = .787")
2900 fps
Bullet Gyroscopic Stability (GS): Jacketed = 10
Twist Rate = 13.5:1

There are several factors, but this is a quick (in the ball park) calculation.

I would stay around 10 twist. My 22-250 is a 1-12 shooting 53 grain bullets, it likes very few bullets above 55 grain. The standard for a 223 is 1-7 to 1-9.

2900fps for a 55g 243 is extremely slow, should be in the 3400-3600 range pretty easily.

Many years ago I had a 244 Remington built on a Mauser action. It had a 1-12 twist. The bullet I used then was the 75 grain Speer HP and what a tackdriver/Prairie dog devastator. That was one soft bullet and it really made hole in the few coyotes I shot with it. It had a heavy varmint barrel and the only coyote hunting it got were when a coyote was out after the prairie dogs we shot the day before. I just wish we had 55 grain Ballistic Tips and 58 gr. Vmaxes back then. I never shot a heavier bullet than 75 grains in that rifle and it was still shooting great when I sold it.

My bad...you are correct. I should have input 3,900 fps. That would make a large difference. I would concur that a 1:10 would be a better value. It would allow the use of heavier bullets should one want to go heavier.

x3 on the 1:10 243 with 55gr Nosler's. up
For some reason, those 55gr Noslers groop amazingly tighter than the 58gr v-max - one ragged hole at 100; worth the premium over the v-max cost wise. Liquifies a coyote internally!
Plus I can (and have) drop in a 80gr ttsx round and take a deer, on the same rifle (within reasonable range <200 for me).

I would want a faster twist, at least a 1-9, opens you up to a variety bullets

If you don’t care about pelts wouldn’t virtually any caliber work? Why not just use your deer rifle that way if it is deer season and you see a deer or a hog or whatever you have enough gun?

I use a Swift if I’m strictly hunting them but otherwise whatever guns closest is my yote gun. I’ve killed more with a shotgun hanging out of a tractor window than any other caliber. They seem to be really wise creatures until you start shredding a pasture and then they get really dumb really fast.
