First time in almost a year I went out with my crossbow on Corps land. Bright sunshine in the wooded bottoms, dappled sunlight among many shadows. I was making my way to my target are and noticed a lot of fresh <24 hr-old sign. Footprints and rooting, so I slowed up, keeping my eyes peeled. I turned a bend to my left and saw something to my right 15-20 yards out. Shadows look like logs, anthills look like sleeping hogs. This looked like a...suitcase? In the grass in a non-special, non-specific place. The sun and the wind were to my back, glare on my glasses. What? What I saw looked like a suitcase with the rollers in the air. Or was it an ear? But hogs don't have ears on both ends. Now I'm in bad spot perhaps - wind and sun wise. The outline was perfectly straight but at an angle, lighter on the bottom. Looked through my 4x scope. No movement, no hair. Why was a suitcase thrown aside? My brain and my eyes caught up with each other and I realized it was a hog. As I leveled a head popped up and then to its feet. Shot out simultaneously. Miss, as I watched 6-8 hogs get up and take off. I then wasted 3 more arrows checking my zero in a tree, leaving one. My scope was off - too far apparently.

Great story telling...to bad about the ending.

So the hogs grabbed their luggage and checked out.

Next time…

Well in this case they WERE the luggage and not the dinner.
