Which traditional 12 volt brand have you had the best experience with?

DuraLast, Everstart, Interstate, Continental, Other?

Thanks in advance.

Superstart from O'Reilly they're good for the price, BUT i believe interstate is the best.
a lot of store batteries are made by Johnson Controls, and they get different labels slapped on them.

Most recently, Continental.
I like the Everstart Maxx because of the three year warranty but they’ve been a bit hard to find lately.

More of that monopoly stuff, three corporations make most brands.

A few years ago I put a Duralast battery from Autozone in my tractor and it was good battery with a 3 or 4 yr warranty. I also had good luck with Walmart Everstart Maxx.

I just bought a Diehard at Firestone for my 2018 F-150. Never in my life have I had a battery go bad on a 3yo vehicle. I believe the on/off start has everything to do with it! And batteries, like everything else, have become expensive!

I had to replace a factory Ford battery in my F-250 last year in Sept. It was only 1.5 yrs old.

Most automotive batteries made in America are manufactured by one of two companies: Johnson Controls, Inc. or Exide Technologies. The dominant replacement market brand names, Interstate and DieHard, are both Johnson Controls products, as is the Optima brand. Exide Technologies markets batteries under the Exide, and NASCAR Select brand names, and has manufactured the Champion brand, as well. However, Champion batteries are now manufactured by Johnson Controls. The other large domestic battery manufacturer, Delphi Corporation, sold its automotive battery business to Johnson Controls in 2005.

Though a particular battery’s manufacturer can be identified though a manufacturer’s code number stamped into the battery’s case, here’s a short list of what’s made by whom:

Brand Manufacturer
ACDelco Johnson Controls
Advance Auto Johnson Controls
AutoCraft Johnson Controls
Autolite Exide
AutoZone Johnson Controls
Bosch Johnson Controls
Champion Johnson Controls
Costco Johnson Controls
Delco Johnson Controls
Delco-Remy Exide
DieHard Johnson Controls
Duralast Johnson Controls
Duralast Johnson Controls
Equalizer Johnson Controls
EverStart (Wal-Mart) Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on model
Firestone Johnson Controls
Interstate Johnson Controls
Marathon Exide
Motorcraft Johnson Controls
NAPA Exide
Optima Johnson Controls
Orbital Exide
Pep Boys Johnson Controls
Sears Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on model

Wal-Mart Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on model

Leaking and off-gassing. I replaced mine within a year. After the OEMs croak, I always replace with Odyssey.

Best OEM I ever had was the Panasonic that came in our 4Runner.

They lasted 4 years on my ‘14. The set in my ‘19 will be 3 years next month. Will replace with a sealed battery.

Thanks for all the information. I have used DuraLast , Continental and Interstate but had no experience with EverStart. I just bought a 4Runner with a 2 1/2 year old EverStart and am doing some research before it needs replacing. I knew there was only a handful of manufacturers but the list of who makes what and the positive comments on Johnson Controls is a handy reference.

I did have a DuraLast that played out 9 days before the end of the full replacement warranty. Replacement was quick and easy.

Thanks again.

East Penn makes batteries for several companies including Deka, Caterpillar, Freightliner/Western Star, NAPA and some others. I was a die hard Johnson Controls fan of Interstate and Motorcraft for years, but I finally switched to consignments from my Western Star dealers and NAPA due to performance. We are experiencing better results with the East Penn built batteries.

It’s all about the individual specs. Not all specs are created equal, there for not all brands under say mfg are created equal
