Well, I thought we’d make the board last night, but I got up this morning and I don’t think it was meant to be. Shot this sow yesterday afternoon and she was right at 260# by my cheap academy scales. It was hard hunting in the crunchy snow. I’ll be glad when this crap is gone.

No sir, thats a good pig but its gonna have to have a 3 in that first number to make and stay on that board

Our last 2 pigs were boars looking for one with some bone in its mouth

Both were short, I think 3 5/8 is the cutter pig

Yes sir, I agree. I saw one that I think will go 300#+ but she was in a large group in the wheat. The snow drifts were 3’ deep in some places. We sounded like a herd of Buffalo trying to get around. I think next weekend will be good.

As it stands right now, that 260 lb sow would put jrfan ON THE BOARD in 6th place and a potential pot of $5,000. Prizes go to 10th. I think I would have posted it.

Change your pattern confused2
I used to say pigs were dumb but grew to realize they are quite smart but gluttony always gets them in the end.

It's also interesting that biggest cutters, 4 4/8, doesn't make top 10 in weight. I've killed quite a few hogs and notice cutters on the big ones broken quite often. This one has had great growth and hasn't chipped or broken a cutter, imagine one that could pull that off and live a good enough life to reach that magical 370#-400# plus region. Considering they curve and also get polished on trees, that would look like a full curl ram eeks333

Just curious on the big ones age…

For pig reaching that 300 pound mark

How old do y’all think they have to be

I know diet, environment etc is involved but is a pig like that 5,6,7 years old?

Idk

Yep. Biggest cutters on our place consistent come from pigs in the 200-225lb range. Thinner cutters but rarely broken. Above that, As you have noticed, they are often broken

I used this article at the time, and by its record the only 300lb pig I have taken was in the 5-6 year range.

That is actually a pretty good article. Unfortunately, the author misnumbered the premolars, labeling the P1-P3 before getting into the molars. Hogs actually have 4 premolars, not 3. He didn't count the first one, LOL. The first premolar is vestigial and is present in some, but not all hogs. It is being lost evolutionarily, sort of like humans are losing 3rd molars (not everybody develops all of their 3rd molars anymore). The first premolar is actually visible in several pics, 6-7 Month, 10 Month, 18-20 Month, and 72-84 month. It is the tooth between the canine and what the author has labeled as P1 (which is actually P2).

Using toothwear to age is a proven technique, but is somewhat problematic. It is used with horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, deer, elk, humans, etc. If you are going for a ballpark assessment, the problems don't matter too much. If you are looking for specific ages, it is important that the synoptic comparative sample is from the same general area as the specimen being studied. In other words, the tooth wear on hogs from New Zealand may not be at the same rate as the tooth wear on hogs from north central Texas because of the different diets of the hogs in vastly different regions or parts of the world.

Otherwise, good pics, explanation, and certainly good enough for ballpark assessments.
