Yes i think we are gonna give it a try
It is one of those deals where you have to ask yourself, what are the chances that I will get my boar of a lifetime in February?

Some body will when, odds are low though.
Makes me wonder if he winner has been fed in a pen?

Yes, but a low 300 may get you a nice check
That top spot is lotto type luck
Anyway, we are doing it and will have a good time doing it
My son is tagging along with us this year for the first time
Yes, but a low 300 may get you a nice check
A low 300 is a hog of a lifetime for most folks which many/most have never attained. So will Feb be the month?
Makes me wonder if he winner has been fed in a pen?
They will lie detector winners to help prevent that sort of cheating. What isn't cheating is running a feeder on an isolated property and heavy feeding a local boar or boars for the last few months in anticipation of the contest. Some guys will intentionally not shoot the largest of their hogs and hope they will still be around for contests such as this.
I keep on top of my properties as best I can. As such, most of what I am seeing are below 200 and most of those are below 150. Would not do much good for me to enter unless I find some large, isolated property that hasn't been hunted in years that might have a nice, juicy, unhunted population of hogs.

I believe that last year’s contest had a few hogs over 400 lbs. and several in the high 300’s.
I can’t say I’ve ever seen one that big. The largest we’ve killed on my place was 247 lbs. and he was enormous. Most are 150 lbs. or less.

A buddy and I entered up for the 3th year in a row. Its only $100 a man , better chance of getting in the money than buying lotto tickets and adds a lot of excitement to the hunts for us. I killed a 320 lb boar in January before the first year we entered. There are sows around this year that look like volkswagens.

Its a cool looking contest with some good payouts. I personally haven't seen a hog even near 300 in my area. Lots of 200lbers but no where near what it would take.
Posted By: GusWayne
Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 01/29/22 03:26 AM
If they pay out more spots, say to 10
And idk if they will or not
It gonna take a low 300 to sniff a check
And thats a monster
I have 1, saw her 3 different times during deer season that I think will break 3
But, she could be long gone by now...
We didn't shoot her for that reason
I think my buddy signed me up unsure of the name

It is my opinion that the money(new pickup money) has gotten to the point where dishonesty is bound to happen. I believe last year that one or more of the top few came in the last couple of days of the month. Coincidence?
I believe that the feeding out stuff, no pen of course, is the way a lot of these winners are happening.
I'm not looking for an argument this is just my opinion. If it's within the rules to feed out a pig with the potential to win 70k, then why wouldn't folks do it?
Posted By: diablodog
Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 02/04/22 08:15 PM
I had a really big sow hanging around last month so I kept putting cupcakes out by the feeder for it . That back fired as the sow seemed to have died from high cholesterol just before Feb 1st .
Banking hogs is like banking big bucks...and then the neighbor shoots them.

Folks will cheat for any amount of money, be it $700, $7000 or $70000
I don't have a say in any of it but personally Id like to see a pay out down to say 25
And last year that was correct, the 2 largest came in the last day or two

Well, I thought we’d make the board last night, but I got up this morning and I don’t think it was meant to be. Shot this sow yesterday afternoon and she was right at 260# by my cheap academy scales. It was hard hunting in the crunchy snow. I’ll be glad when this crap is gone.

Yes sir, I agree. I saw one that I think will go 300#+ but she was in a large group in the wheat. The snow drifts were 3’ deep in some places. We sounded like a herd of Buffalo trying to get around. I think next weekend will be good.

As it stands right now, that 260 lb sow would put jrfan ON THE BOARD in 6th place and a potential pot of $5,000. Prizes go to 10th. I think I would have posted it.

Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 02/11/22 06:37 AM
It's also interesting that biggest cutters, 4 4/8, doesn't make top 10 in weight. I've killed quite a few hogs and notice cutters on the big ones broken quite often. This one has had great growth and hasn't chipped or broken a cutter, imagine one that could pull that off and live a good enough life to reach that magical 370#-400# plus region. Considering they curve and also get polished on trees, that would look like a full curl ram

Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 02/11/22 11:27 AM
Just curious on the big ones age…
For pig reaching that 300 pound mark
How old do y’all think they have to be
I know diet, environment etc is involved but is a pig like that 5,6,7 years old?
Idk

Yep. Biggest cutters on our place consistent come from pigs in the 200-225lb range. Thinner cutters but rarely broken. Above that, As you have noticed, they are often broken

I used this article at the time, and by its record the only 300lb pig I have taken was in the 5-6 year range.
https://www.bionet.nz/assets/Uploads/A15-Pig-Aging-Tool-minor-revision-2020.pdf
That is actually a pretty good article. Unfortunately, the author misnumbered the premolars, labeling the P1-P3 before getting into the molars. Hogs actually have 4 premolars, not 3. He didn't count the first one, LOL. The first premolar is vestigial and is present in some, but not all hogs. It is being lost evolutionarily, sort of like humans are losing 3rd molars (not everybody develops all of their 3rd molars anymore). The first premolar is actually visible in several pics, 6-7 Month, 10 Month, 18-20 Month, and 72-84 month. It is the tooth between the canine and what the author has labeled as P1 (which is actually P2).
Using toothwear to age is a proven technique, but is somewhat problematic. It is used with horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, deer, elk, humans, etc. If you are going for a ballpark assessment, the problems don't matter too much. If you are looking for specific ages, it is important that the synoptic comparative sample is from the same general area as the specimen being studied. In other words, the tooth wear on hogs from New Zealand may not be at the same rate as the tooth wear on hogs from north central Texas because of the different diets of the hogs in vastly different regions or parts of the world.
Otherwise, good pics, explanation, and certainly good enough for ballpark assessments.

There have been larger feral hogs killed in Texas.
What keeps people from trapping and culling, you mean for the contest? Probably the lie detector validation for winners.

EVERY form of security can be beat. Nobody said that they couldn't. Given the chronological length of this event and the geographic range covered, there is no way for their to be judges everywhere all the time with each team, so they use lie detectors.

Diablo's Helpers got 4 last night for a total of about 750 lbs , BUT not one bigger than 250 . It is hard to judge the size at 200 yards + with thermal in tall grass down in a canyon . Did see some very large tracks , but not the maker .

Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 02/24/22 08:43 PM
Same boat as you . I got a big boar at dusk with the AR-15 in 357 Diablo and regular scope . Big enough to weight on my scale , but right at 300 is not enough for the drive . Later that night I had a small boar [ about 150 ] at the feeder with a bunch of raccoons . 30 AR with thermal at 125 yards , it was like a cartoon . I hit the pig in the heart area , he went to his knees , the raccoons scattered . But there was one on top of the feeder and he fell onto the pigs head at the shot . The pig then takes off right towards me with a raccoon on his head , he plows over another running raccoon and the one on his head falls off . My next shot hits between his eyes and he flips . Watching it on the thermal was amusing to say the least .

Re: Wise Co Hog Contest - 03/01/22 04:31 PM
I saw this on another place, huge controversy over winning pig.
In these contests, are cut hogs automatically dropped from being weighed? I’ve come across some with the notched ears before.
What do you consider to be cut? Do you mean castrated? If so, they are usually not allowed, or may be allowed in a separate category.
"Notched" ears is weird on several levels. Hogs can naturally end up with notched or cut ears due to fighting, snagging, or be done by people. The notching or cutting of the ears probably used to be more common with domestic hogs than it is today. However, some trappers and hog doggers will do this to mark hogs they have caught previously if they are going to turn them loose.
Notching or cutting the ears does nothing to the development of the hogs and does not necessarily indicate that the hog was farm bred or raised.

Over 450 lbs, its raised a lot of brows...
Thats the equivalent of a 250" low fence Whitetail that stuck around for 3 years on a small tract of land, according to their story...

“I’ve heard” in north TX near those peanut farms that pigs get massive. I’m not claiming I know firsthand or anyone that has killed one in person.

I've had folks talk of huge hogs along the Red where we hunt, just in areas that don't get a lot of hog hunting pressure.

Found this on FB this morning
**2022 WCHC - Letter from Tournament Directors**
Good Morning Hog Hunters and Followers,
We just want to clarify some things to you regarding this years Wise County Hog Contest and address some of the concerns y'all have regarding the integrity of our contest. We do our best to keep this contest as clean as possible! For those of you that personally know us and have seen us weigh hogs, you know the questions we ask and the lengths we go through to make sure everything is done correctly and within the rules of the contest. We have spent the past decade working hard to maintain the integrity of the contest, fine tuning the weigh-in process and the rules as we continue to grow. We will continue to do everything we can within the rules of our contests to make sure it stays reputable and honest!
Regarding this years 1st Place Hog: There are complaints about us letting them in the contest this year after “cheating” last year, that is not accurate. As we are all aware the contestant posted on several large hunting pages soliciting for a big hog last year during the 2021 Wise County Hog Contest. The rule of no solicitation for a hog was implemented last year during the contest due to that post. So to clear everything up, the contestant at the time was not cheating, he and his team however were reprimanded for it. Nor did they bring a hog to weigh in during the 2021 contest. The reason why contestants can’t solicit a hog and offer a land owner a portion of the winnings is because that would make them a team member in our eyes.
However, the contestant in question did manage to dig himself a bit of a hole after getting upset about the comments, and made matters worse for him and his team. That was a judge of his character, not us, nor our contest. We did our due diligence last year concerning the incident and we did our due diligence this year when they weighed in, plus some. This team has not shown to us any signs of cheating of any kind in the 2022 Wise County Hog Contest. As for the polygraph, not just the shooter will be taking it, but all 4 team members!
This issue has never happened before in the contest and we wanted to make sure it would not happen again, so we made it a hard rule last year and every contest moving forward. As I said, we are evolving in this contest, as it grows to make sure everyone stays honest and we maintain the integrity of the contest, we can’t stress this enough.
This contest has come with some severe growing pains over the years that we have worked very hard behind the scenes, the implementation of the rule of no solicitation for a hog is a prime example. We want this contest to be honest and we will continue to strive to make sure it is! We will make sure all the rules are kept to the best of our ability for every contestant that enters any of our contests!
And to the 2nd – 10th Place Winners and Cutter Winner… Congratulations to you, too! We also want to thank every contestant and sponsor, because you guys make this hunt what it is!
-The Hunting Game
I saw this on another place, huge controversy over winning pig.
In these contests, are cut hogs automatically dropped from being weighed? I’ve come across some with the notched ears before.
The pig in question, smashed all prior records
Over 450 lbs, its raised a lot of brows...
Thats the equivalent of a 250" low fence Whitetail that stuck around for 3 years on a small tract of land, according to their story...
Make your own judgement, Ive made mine
Well, it does happen. As far as smashing "all prior records," for this contest, sure. For Texas? Not hardly. Weiser keeps an interesting list...

All i know is freaks do come along! They are not everyday hogs but they arent unicorns either! I know nothing of the circumstances regarding the hog everyone is butt hurt over but i will share my once in a lifetime beast!
I am almost 6’2” and weigh 230lbs in this pic. I killed this beast in Young County in 2014 after we had severe flooding all over the area. I can tell you 4 grown [censored] men struggled to move this hog into a tractor bucket. My mechanical scale from Harbor Freight stopped at 550lbs…this hog pushed the needle passed that mark! I dont care if you believe me, i dont care if you dont as there were 3 others that experienced this mammoth.
I PURPOSELY aligned myself at the FRONT of this hog so nobody could say i stood behind it to make it appear larger. This hog was every bit of 8’ from its nose to its toes in this pic. The only reason for my post is to say…i know first hand that there are some big boys out there!!! He had both balls, ears werent touched and he wasnt even stinky! Smelled like maple syrup to be honest! lol
Just sharing the facts…nothing more and nothing less!

Wow! That hog makes you look small.
Maybe I should make a practice of taking photos with big pigs. Perhaps my wife would quit telling me to cut back on the calories, eh?

http://wwtworldrecords.com/record-books/In case you haven’t followed the winning teams story, I’ll add what I know to be true. From things they have posted
1. The winning team advertised last year seeking to find a large pig to shoot on social media. The contest actually changed the rules of the contest to prevent this from happening anymore
2. They then shoot this pig and claim to have watched it for 3 years and there is any pig on the same property that’s about it’s size they claim
3. This year they bring in this pig, a record pig for a contest this size
If they had this pig and another monster why they advertising to shoot one?
The odds of any pigs much less a record pig staying around for 3 years is lottery type odds
I’m skeptical

There are some massive hogs out there. They get big by not being stupid and sticking to the thick cover. Corn fed year a round, sweet potatoes all summer, protein galore.

As far as the winning team goes…I take my polygraph next week and I sure hope they ask them more questions than they said they were going to ask me.

#2 doesn't make sense to me, because they did #1 last year. but I'll wait for the polygraph results and if all four pass, I will give them my sincere congratulations.

All 4 guys on the first place team passed their polygraph.
And that satisfies the qualifications for the contest along with having the heaviest hog.
All 4 guys on the first place team passed their polygraph.
Pay 'em.
Congratulations.

As far as hunting competitions for $ go, this one is solid. It's successful, has endured and evolved. They run a good business, and this is a big part of it as it has no doubt increased their traffic. Controversy is free marketing. You can bet they'll continue to evolve, make changes and stay around. I haven't followed it closely in a vey long time. I'd be willing to bet that the average weight of places 2-10 is up this year over the last 5. Anybody know?
