What’s a good bullet weight/style for pigs? Shooting the CVA Optima.

I would suggest a 290 grain Barnes T-EZ or a Swift A-Frame 300 grain (if you can find them). These two bullets will hold together. You'll get lots of input on this topic. Best of luck on your hunt!

All the pig shooting I ever did with a muzzleloader was done with round ball or conical.. however I’d think the 240/250 grain XTP would work well.. at least it does in .44 mag.

I’ve use 250 shockwaves with 100 gr of triple7 and I get pass throughs every time on big boars on broadside shots.

250 grain is plenty.

Have shot them with Hornady 250 gr sst with no problems

I shot two a few weeks apart many years ago with .45 cal Kentucky rifle shooting patched round balls.
Not specifically hunting pigs either time, just happened to have loaded smoke pole with me in the VW buggy.
One was accidental good shot at 75 yards and dropped 120lb sow in her tracks.
One was not so good shot at 30 yards that ran over 400 yards across a hay field so recovery was pretty easy.

Several years back took Kentucky Jr, (.45 Kentucky cap & ball) out on a hog hunt..
Powder FFF Goex was over 20+ years old.
Flask had me .22grain measure for me .44 pistal bout 1/3 the powder, on it..
forgot ta change ta .45 measure,
Still put down a 125lb or so hog with it....

Keep your head held high & your powder dry...

I shoot them with whatever I have loaded up for deer. These days it is two 60 grain Triple 7 pellets behind a 250 grain Hornady MonoFlex ML sabot. That mono metal bullet has some serious penetration and great expansion. Only recovered one since I started shooting them, and it was out of my pistol. Serious quartering away shot and recovered under the hide on off shoulder.

I don't think you can go too small out of a .50. Anything you would use on a white tail will work fine.
