I was lucky enough to get on a lease 15 miles from the border. It’s nice to see 20 coveys a day in the heat. Especially with a new pup. It’s thick and sticky this year, had to boot the Brittanys after the first day. The shorthairs toughed it out. Great dog work! I love that country, but it’s a long way from Graham Tx.

Dang to be young enough to still do that is awesome. Looks like a great trip. 20+ coveys a day is awesome!

Nice. Heading down (not that far) this coming weekend. Was hoping for a good frog floater rain this week as its dry down there, but ain't gonna happen. How were the scenting conditions?

The mornings were wet and good in certain areas. One of the problems we had was finding dead bird in the thick grass. We quit shooting doubles after the first covey rise. If the bird buried themselves up in the thick tall stuff it was almost impossible for the dogs to smell them even if you immediately walked right to where they fell. The first morning is the first time I remember losing a dead bird in several years, my hunting partners lab is the best dead bird dog I’ve seen and the rest of the mutts aren’t bad.

The coveys were large with many 30 bird plus. I just hope I have time to make at least three more trips this year. If I’m going to drive that far I’m hunting at least three days.

Scenting conditions are tough in McMullen County. Dry as a popcorn fart, birds are hanging by feeders, no Forbes growing on the ground. Cattle haven’t kept up with the buffle grass.

I thought 20 covey days were gone forever.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Awesome Scalebuster!!! Nothing better for a young dog than wild birds.
The Missouri quail season was way down for me. I sent my first year dog to North Carolina for the winter with Mike Harryman.
Hopefully you get to go back a few more times this season. ENJOY

Please send me the rancher's phone #, I"m going to offer him double what you paid him for the lease next year.

I’ve hunted that part of the country. It’s definitely got a lot of illegal traffic.
