Planning on building the carriage in the next couple months and firing it a a gathering of good friends early next spring.

The whole subject is very interesting. It is something I've thought about getting into. For example why did they use iron balls instead of lead. How did they keep the ball in the cannon, I don't think they patched the bball. Canisters and sabots- all sorts of stuff. The fuse- that was more 1700's. By the Civil War they had a pull string and sort of a match deal. I've looked around but never found a book on the subject.

Did you only use powder or did you have a projectile also?
How big a bore?
How much powder did you use?

28” barrel with 2 1/2” bore….

First couple loads were powder with newspaper wad…1/2 oz & 3/4 oz

Then shot a couple tennis balls with 1 oz & 1 1/4 oz loads

Finally shot pool balls with 1 1-2 oz and 1 3/4 oz….the pic is the 1 1/2 oz shot

This morning I loaded about fifteen 1 3-4 oz powder loads for this afternoon/evening

Heavy duty aluminum foil in a shallow bowl the add powder, fold sides in and press into a puck. Load the puck, add wadding, projectile, prick the powder load with the brass vent pick, put the fuse into the powder and light it off…

Bring that little beauty up here for the Central Wyoming Machinegun and Cannon shoot in June . By a spot on the firing line and go to town as they say.
Good time to see the prairie rattlers out and about, we usually move a few off the highway on the way up.

Bois d'arc makes good carriage for your cannon.

Launched some tennis balls and raddled a few windows in the neighborhood this afternoon. Daughter-in-law lives about a mile away said they heard it at their house.







Last weekend we were firing off a bluff across a valley. Today we were shooting at a tree line about 80 yards away. The report was significantly louder today!

One of my neighbors has one that he built in high school. Course that was back in the early 60's. He would fire it to start the Hotter Than Hell bicycle race in Wichita Falls
