Dam 125 views and nobody uses it…
Gas Guzzler was just waiting to ride me if I shared it in the rifle section, which is why I went here…

I guess you could kill something with it, but it is a basic match bullet and not designed for hunting. I prefer the Hornady SST bullet myself and have had good luck on deer and hogs with it.

I know guys that use them. They are high shoulder shooters so not really a great testimony to pure bullet performance.

I’ll shoot a Sierra match king at game all day over any other match bullet I’ve found so far. SMKs shoot lights out for me but I have found the tipped match bullets (TMKs, ELD-Ms, AMAXs) expand more consistently than the SMKs, which IME sometimes expand and sometimes just pencil through. One of my conspiracy theories is when you look at the tips in a box of SMKs, you notice some of the hollow points are almost completely closed, and some are more open. I think one of those meplat uniforming tools that makes the hollow points/tips more consistent would also make the expansion more consistent. Just my .02, LeonCarr

On deer and hogs put them in the right place and I don't think you will be disappointed. It is a heavy bullet at moderate velocity, I don't see lack of penetration being an issue on deer and hogs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLEqcvHGB7w

Been looking for some 6.5 cm inn Austin area, Hard to find. I think match tips can perform well while hunting. Depends on shot placement.

I have with 308.
DRT.
The entry hole was the size of the bullet, the exit was the size of a 1/2 dollar.

I too am new to the world of 6.5, so take this for what it’s worth…….
I too bought 4 boxes of Hornady Match before discovering that it is more so for target competition than hunting. From what I understand, the difference between the Match and a hunting bullet like Hornady Precision Hunter is expansion on impact; the Match bullets don’t expand like the Precision Hunter bullets do. Will the Match bullets kill a deer, probably. The problem with the Match is, it may take longer for the deer to expire and you may not find that great of a blood trail.
I bought my first 6.5 Creedmoor rifle about a month ago. So far I’ve shot 2 deer and a hog. I only had a blood trail on one deer, though all didn’t make it more than 30 yards (the Hornady Precision Hunter knocks them down!). You can probably find Hornady Precision Hunter on Ammoseek.com, but it will be almost double the price at $75. However, paying an extra $40 is cheaper than paying a tracker to find your deer with a blood hound 😉.

I hand load the 147 ELD-M in my target rifle. I have killed one deer with it, but the 143 ELD-X is my go to hunting round. The one I killed with it was DRT. Entry was bullet sized and exit was about the size of a quarter or maybe a bit larger. Shot was straight through the heart so no heavy bones were hit.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Likely wouldnt be my first choice for a hunting bullet, but I doubt you have any issues with good shot placement. I would shoot deer with them if it is what I had.
I have heard many times the target bullets have thicker jackets. Watched a video on youtube a while back shooting eldx and eldm into gel blocks. The ELDX penetrated deeper and retained more weight on all tests which does not seem to support that. They both did more than well enough to kill deer with.

I know some guys on here hunt with it and report success as I have seen it in other threads. I went through this dilema with my .308 recently. I have been shooting accubonds, but could not find any. I did find some A-Maxes (another target bullet that was not intended for hunting). There was many reports of success using the Amax as a hunting bullet, so I bought a couple hundred. Regardless of how well they perform, when I am done with them, I will likely go back to a hunting bullet, but we make due with what we can get sometimes. If I were in your shoes, I would shoot those match bullets and go for a high shoulder. You might lose some meat, but I doubt you will lose any deer. In the meantime, look for some eld-x, or SST, or accubonds, etc.

Its match ammo, will never kill a deer. Likely won't break the skin.

Sorry procraft05, I missed this post. I hate to think that I am about to agree with Old Stony on this one. My daughter shot the buck of a lifetime with the exact bullet posted. 6.5 Creedmore, Hornady Match 147gr ELD This was a 195 pound whitetail 8 pointer, scored 168". She was about near into panic when she hit him dead on behind the shoulder at 150yards. He turned and walked about 100 yards the other direction. She hit him again on the other side, he walked about 100 yards before collapsing. I am glad we had a big clearing and he didn't get a chance to walk away. Neither bullet exited, but we found them just under the skin on the opposite side of the impact. One bullet under the skin on the right shoulder, one on the left. I am not a ballistics guy, but I think that bullet should have done a lot more damage than it did. Just my opinion. But I will stick with my Winchester 308 168gr Match BTHPs, they are killers.
