Took this guy on my last sit of the Matagorda Island TPWD hunt I drew this year. By 7:45 that morning I'd already seen a small 6pt, a doe, and was watching a nice 8pt in the distance when this mature 11pt pushing a doe popped up at 50 yards. When I saw his width and split brow tines I knew he was the one I wanted and dropped in on the spot. Yes that's a palm tree in the back ground. Turns out this buck was the best scoring and heaviest (100lbs) of the hunt. Biologist aged him at 5.5yrs. Overall 20 hunters harvested 24 deer, majority of which were bucks. This was a 2 deer hunt, one doe and one buck greater than 13 inches. I did a hunting report in the Public Hunting section if you want some more info and pic's. Was a hunt unlike anyone I've ever been on https://texashuntingforum.com/forum...orda-island-deer-hunt-report#Post8454649

Very cool. didn't figure the deer there would be big ones, color looks lighter than I expected. Would make for a cool different mount.

That lighter coloration makes him look like he's an old buck but I guess it has nothing to do with age. Congratulations! That is a nice public land trophy!

.300wsm. Overkill for these little deer but wanted to be prepared for a long shot if needed.

Congratulations on a very unique deer from a very unique place. Thanks for the write up. Hopefully that will save some future hunters from having a miserable hunt due to being unprepared. Especially considering you can't just run to town to get what you need.
