Calendar Updated. Sometimes those suckers are hard to catch, but the birds always seem to eat well. Fun times.

I've taken my kids at least 5 times over the years and we have had very little success catching these rainbows. And those fishing around us didn't seem to be doing well either. I'm not sure what the proper technique and bait is.

I'm not sure what the proper technique and bait is. I used to catch them pretty good once they were released, I would use 4lb line and spinning rod and throw a super duper.

I get the bubble gum or orange.. typically pop off the head and use a small hook with a split shot off the bottom.. you can use a small treble as well. The boys and I never have an issue limiting out. I always buy extra to pass out to the frustrated parents

Here is a guaranteed method of catching those little stockers. For each person, you will make 5 leaders since the limit is 5 trout. Using 4# test and super small treble hooks, make 5 ready made leaders about 1 foot long with a loop on one end. The treble hooks need to be super small and light because the bait needs to float. I use a #18 or #16 treble hook. Any bigger and the bait will sink. You can get them online. On the fishing rod, put a 1/2oz or smaller slip sinker and a small snap swivel. A super cheap ultralight rig is perfect.
The best bait is Berkley Power Bait Trout Dough. Put on one leader onto the snap swivel and form a small ball of the dough around the treble hook. Cast it out but not too far, the trout like to swim in a circle around the pond just like the do at the hatchery. The sinker will sit on the bottom and the bait will float 1 foot above the bottom, right in sight of the fish and above any weeds.
When the trout swallows the bait, reel it in, hold it above the cooler, and just release the snap swivel. Don't even try to retrieve the hook because it's a real pain. Just wait until it's time to clean the fish. Hook another leader onto the snap swivel and repeat until you have 5. Super easy. I can take any little kids that are big enough to hold a Snoopy rod, and have them limited out before they lose interest

This is one of those programs that makes me happy to give TPWD my fees each year.
Palehorse, I'm definitely trying that, thanks.

When you pop off the head, is it the head or the worm that you use?
