No ducks yet on ponds 1 through 4. New pond 9 had a couple. Lake A spied about 30 rafting in open water but near shore. Looked like greys but not sure. And yes. Yes I am a region namer.

Yep, I've been all over the last 2 weekends and am not seeing much. Few here and there but I think it will be a tough opener.
We are suppose to have a cold front come in Thursday, not going to really get all that cold in north texas. But I am hoping it brings a few ducks in.
I've got one more spot I may check out Wednesday morning, hopefully it has a few ducks bc that is where I will likely hunt this weekend.

I saw a few in a wildlife refuge. Some mallards and teal, but mostly pintails.

I figured we'd see the blue wing teal shot.

Speaking of which, even though it's probably taboo, it's time to remind everyone to keep your leftover teal tags. There good for next year.

[censored], still not seeing many birds. And I follow almost every outfitter in NTX on social media and they aren't posting much. Talked to several who say they don't have alot of birds.
Have a little cold front moving in Thursday, I'm not overly optimistic it will bring any birds. I am optimistic the second split will be good.
Whats everyone else seeing in NTX?

My back yard is a major Creek on Ray Roberts. I have not been woken up by gunfire since the season started. Guessing no birds to speak of yet and have not seen any over the house or heard any geese yet.

I'm sure the birds WERE there Friday morning but by the time all the mud motors driven by idiots rafted them up about a dozen times the ducks did what they do every year on the eve of an opener....gave'em all the finger and said adios.

Surface drives are one of the worst things that has happened to duck hunting. But yea I run one. Guess it’s more Surface drives and idiots combined,

Then on top of that, camp in the spot that afternoon to reserve spot for the next morning. I have actually never done that, but it has given me some new ideas.

Three or so years ago I could get to lake a about midnight and still be one of the first ones there. This year I was there at 4pm and all usual spots were taken. There are no secrete spots, but there are ones less people know about. It's like everything else. Hunter gets beat to his spot so next year he gets there a couple hours earlier, which causes the guy he beat to do the same next time. Soon we'll be setting up in September.

Scouting report for this week.
Few grays on tank 4 all other tanks empty. Lake a had good number of birds opening day. Haven't been out since then but will give it a look Friday. Lake b had Mrs Baird's geese and ducks. No snowbirds. Lake c was empty. Mallards have not shown back up at tank 1 yet but it's early. Hard to tell on geese. There here but I'm thinking they've decided to become Texans. Cranes have been migrating over the house daily.

I was thinking about camping in some spots, not to reserve them, but so I do not have drive my boat dark 30 in the morning. But I guess times are getting bad for public duck hunting. It used to be bad that duck holes got shot out, now they are getting scouted out/camped out before the hunt ever starts. Scouting in the afternoon should be done with binoculars. If ducks get kicked up, hopefully you are far enough away you can back off and they settle back into same spot, and you watch them settle back in with binoculars. That is when you know it will be on the next morning. But if you drive into that spot, and camp there, probably low percent of them comeback the next morning.

Slow morning, had 3 gwt come in and was able to knock down 1. A few wood ducks flying at first light but they were doing their own thing. Had a group of a dozen mallards or so circle the dekes high a few times and then went on their way. All in all maybe saw 25-30 ducks all morning.
Was thinking of hunting tomorrow morning, wind will be out of the north but I doubt it pushes any birds down. Still will be in the 60s and 70s this weekend.

Hunter gets beat to his spot so next year he gets there a couple hours earlier, which causes the guy he beat to do the same next time. Soon we'll be setting up in September. Not counting this year ( I went to far north Oklahoma this year) the last 3 years I've slept in my boat on 3 different area lakes and was sleeping on the X Friday night. 2 hunts were a bust and another me and a buddy took limits but not until late morning. Its almost a waste of time sleeping on an X as the scouters like to drive in amongst the birds to see where and how many there are. I knew the birds were rafted up all day but was hoping they would come back Saturday morning. Back in the day, not that I was doing it I imagine that could be done. Today your the bakers dozen number who found the birds or at least some of them. The birds will not stand for it anymore. And by the time the second split starts the birds are mud motor shy. I can't get near them before they lift yup and I have a stock motor. Just a couple weeks ago I was in my deer stand out west( I shot a nice deer this year btw ) it was Friday evening before the opener out there. I hear this mud motor sound. There is a lake where the dam is 1.5 miles from my deer stand. I hear the dam thing take off....run the lake....set down....20 minutes later get back up....run back to ramp....set down....5 minutes later trailer the dam thing. getting back to camp I asked my friend did he hear that engine, he said yea a farmer must be operating a huge generator lol. I informed him what it really was and he couldn't believe it. Call shy, decoy shy, hole shy, spinner shy....and today you can add mud motor shy. Bino's are our friend these days fellas.

I'll run my longtail on the open lake but when I get in the woods it's the paddle and pole. It's really kind of peaceful to pick your way through openings listening for birds.
