Alright alright, I'll say 6 year old, 205. Awesome animal.

You need more hints? grin

He definitely looks bigger than the total I came up with, but I'll stick with it and take my lumps. I had the mass right.

I completely agree with this. Deer is just a stud and looks way bigger than what I came up with as well.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Photos and photo angles can play tricks on your mind...I can attest to this first hand. I have missed the score on many a buck after my first impression of him, by going back to look at various photos and angles. Seeing a buck in a photo and then seeing him live and in color can really change how he looks. Then seeing them on the ground can be even more humbling. Distance from the buck when you see them is one thing that is critical in judging for me...cameras cut that distance down when cropping and/or zooming in. Antler mass hides a lot when live viewing bucks IME. Body size can also but more so from region to region or state to state. Mass and larger body size can make it a whole new ball game for me.

On this ranch if they look way bigger they generally score way more.....there are exceptions but when you manage from large down frames you start with a larger number. Most of us are not used to saying 110" or 115" or 120" then adding in tine length. Most people who view TC pics or still shots of bucks way underestimate the mass and beam length which in turn makes them lower the tine length guesses.
At my age my mind is going in all directions due to me looking at bucks on my LF place then this ranch or another ranch I hunt also. Each one has its own challenges. You just look in the shed pile and start measuring MB and mass along with tine length on those individual sheds. May not be the buck you are looking at live and in color but you have a range to start with. Going in cold with none of the info can make it humbling when first seeing a buck. Most tend to underestimate by a lot. Rarely is there ground shrinkage.

We don't get to hunt deer to get the final answer till deer season. So any current season(velvet growing till velvet shed) deer posting won't have a final answer till they are killed or sheds found later. BTW, You are little off on your guesses...one high and one low. That is hint #2 for those who have not posted yet.

Free, don't change your total
Notice how he said you are a little off on each one and in different directions. I think you are within a couple inches most likely and that would be within 1%! lmao

On a buck this size a little can be 6-8"....it just depends on which one is over and which one is under.....just saying....I did not say how much either one was off either... grin

Well dang, that means i am off on my guess. I was right around 105-106” down and around 84-85” up.

I don’t guess in halves or quarters (or thirty-seconds) so my guesses will be off a little as those add up.

When I try to explain to guys about field scoring I usually tell them no one will get every measurement right but if you try hard and are any good at all then often times you will be over on one and under on another and it will balance out pretty close. Of course, often times you can start off in the wrong direction and just keep getting farther off… ..

never saw anything like that in real life, nor have I ever scored something of that size ... 210-215 ... I wouldn't worry about scoring until it got to the taxidermist ...

^^^even then i wouldn’t worry about scoring it. Its like a LF ranch, at a certain size the issue of it being low fence becomes a moot point, who cares. With a buck like this, who cares what he scores. He’s big enough!

Not feeling too bad about my 220" estimate out of the chute. At 7 I was a little more off on his age. Just a worldclass stud buck...

Dang, I thought i was going to be a ways off. I'll take my 216 and 6. His coat made him look young, but I just didn't see him being 5 with that headgear

Dang, missed the mark on that one. MB length got me by at least 4 inches overall, and 25.5" of NT points wasn't accounted for, I think I had the one kicker at 8 or 9" and the other at 6".

That kind of size hides a lot of inches for sure. I knew it was bigger than my 190" guess, I just didn't know how much bigger. The best thing about it is I will never hunt a place where I need to worry about the difference between 190 to 212....in my hunting life a 190" guess is plenty enough and anything above that is just plain extra.

This is a heckuva a thread for a newbie like me to read up on. My guess woulda been 6, but looks like he was 5. Either way, incredible deer and great photos!
