What does that mean to you?

What does holier than thou mean to you?

I see it often with a derogatory intention.

To be determined

Means you probably have a history of burning crosses in peoples yards when you disagree with their specific Christianity beliefs. Usually in a name of a literal interpretation of a multi-language translated Bible

Probably for the most part these are terms used by non-believers.

Negative, it's usually believers that are persecuted by other believers for not having the exact same evangelical beliefs

I see "Holier than thou" as another term for self righteous.
I see Bible thumping as someone who is very forward or "agressive"about their belief... not really derogatory but not exactly a compliment... depends on the user I guess

Disagree. Christians are persecuted every day somewhere, and it's getting more common here in the USA as we speak. IMO, Bible thumper, holier than thou, etc is definitely a derogatory description that some deserve, and some do not. Seems to me that people need to justify their actions somehow, so running someone down sometimes does that for them, making them feel better about themselves.

I’ve heard it used by both.

Holier than thou= No matter what good deeds I do you still think you're better.
Bible thumper= no matter what the conversation is about your going to try and throw the scripture at me.

I have too, regardless is usually a retort to someones over the top evangelization methodology. Many people believe in Jesus and or he is their savior, but many don't like being told by a fellow Christian their beliefs and life choices arent “good enough”, blasphemy or flat wrong. The retort probably wouldn't come so quick and harsh if the one persecuting actually lived the life they preached. IMO

IMO bible thumper is someone that always has their finger on the trigger to criticize you and use the bible to do it. You're living wrong, you're acting wrong, Jesus sees you, you're gonna burn, etc. And it's usually not that they're wrong, but their approach is just horrible.

Holier than thou isn't necessary a religion reference. To me it suggest someone just thinks they're better than you are, there are things that are below them, or that their chit doesn't stink. Case, conversation at lunch today, where I said I changed the oil and filters in my truck last night. I got a 'You change your OWN oil?' from one person, just dripping with disdain.

There should have been an 11th Commandment: "Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself. "

Biblically that isn't the way it works.

That's just what we need, a more Godless society. Seems to be working out really well nowadays.

That’s a very anti Christian thing to say.
Evangelizing is what we are supposed to do. Granted some are more active at it than others.

It is written many many many times in the Bible.

I've attended worship services for over forty years.

I have yet to see one Bible thumped.
(but Jesus is still Lord)

Buckner Fanning at Trinity Baptist Church (San Antonio) used to slap the Bible against his leg as he paced back and forth preaching. Does that constitute "thumping"? He baptized me. Mom said he was the only preacher that would keep Dad awake. roflmao

Bible Thumper- Derogatory term used to describe a Christian that testifies about the word of God, by someone that either disregards, is ignorant of the word of god, or doesn’t want to hear the word of god.

Holier than thou- Self righteous hypocrite.

Where did I mention anything about being Godless? If you want to practice a certain religion, go right ahead. Just don't try to push you beliefs on others.
