Delmar Smith said that water is more effective but I beg to differ to differ with him. Especially when training to hunt dead and starting the process with the blank gun. It even worked for me on my non hunting dogs. Cut a wiener into bite size pieces and scatter them while calling hunt dead.. Do the same while breaking them to the blank. Start it at a distance. It was never the cure all for me but a start. Ever tried it? Closed mind and not willing to give it a try.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Totally agree with Bill. I've had good success with getting dogs interested in hunting dead using all sorts of things dogs like to eat. When their interest is developed I finish them off with quail wings. My female Brittany Kate is the first one I seriously trained using this method and she is the best I have ever seen finding crippled or dead. That Kate is the most intelligent bird dog of any breed I've ever owned doesn't hurt anything either.

This is my go to method to tech the idea of hunt dead or dead bird commands.
Thanks Bill for sharing

I tried it with steak but my dog would only retrieve prime rib and steaks
Tigger If it isn't white it is not a birddog.
KC Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy. _________________
