I’m flying to a hunting trip in a couple weeks and have never flown with a rifle and ammo. Would y’all give me some tips please as to how to notify airline, pack ammo, lock case etc?

Pack the ammo in factory boxes in your checked luggage.

The rifle case has to be lockable.

You will get enhanced screening when dropping your gun off at the separate location in the airport (near ticketing area at DFW, BOS, CLE, DAL, AUS, and SAT where I have done it).

I've flown with a rifle twice and it was actually the easiest part of the airport experience. You just have to sign a declaration form and lock the case (no TSA locks) where you check your luggage. Someone will escort you to the TSA office and they will let you know if they want you to unlock the case. They didn't even open mine to make sure it wasn't loaded. They just ran a cloth around the seam of the case, put it in something that analyzed the cloth, and gave me a thumbs up. It really was that simple. They can be sticklers about how the case is locked. You need enough locks to keep someone from being able to pull the case open enough to access the firearm. I believe I had three on my case but I can't remember for sure. I've probably left something out, but that is my recollection.

Edit: I had my ammo in plastic MTM cartridge boxes and it was fine. Ammo was inside the rifle case with the rifle.

Thanks for the info! I have everything but the locks. I’ll buy some this week.
