So, I've hauled about 7 or 8 complete-crap blinds to the dump that came with the place. This one is different. Probably from before the previous owner had the place. It has a little, tiny trailer undercarriage underneath (I guess they trailered it into place), and it was obviously built by a real carpenter, either pro or a very good amateur. Real glass windows, with double covers over them; good commercial aluminum roof, solid rings to wire tie-downs, etc. I moved it to behind the house for consideration. Here's the bad news - I can rarely cut a board square, with a square, measuring twice, with a skillsaw. You really have to see it to believe it. I've been around some expert carpenters in my life. Believe me, it didn't rub off. I call it "The '70s blind because of the 'furnishings' ". Here's a couple of pictures: So, what says mis Amigos en el THF? A: Take my time, think it through, and restore it to it's original glory, or B: ...

Well, I dont know, I guess it depends. I am really particular about every measurement on a blind but you may not be. It looks to be a pretty good shape--is it square, like 5x5? I dont like rectangular. The windows do appear to be way too high to me so I would never want to hunt that way regardless of anything else. If they were too high you could put a false bottom in it. But that would make it even heavier, and being heavy in the first place would be a drawback. And what all needs to be replaced--if you have to replace too much is it easier to start over. I do agree its kinda cool, so if youre the type to like a project then it may be fun. Bottom line, FOR ME, every time I try to salvage something used I end up putting more time and effort into it than its worth and then it never ends up like I want(but Im particular.)

Well, it only took a little over 7 months to kinda halfarse do what it woulda taken my dad, or another good carpenter friend of mine probably a day to do well, but that's me. Lots and lots of trial and error, but it's good enough to hunt out of; just needs a pest strip and rat poison added. There are some "repurposed" pieces from a couple of other blinds I've hauled to the dump, some old spray paint I had around, lots of gap-filler spray foam, of course some duct tape, a gallon of redwood stain & sealer, and some plywood crating. The door isn't near square, but it is long-leaf pine, from an ancient barn on the last place. You don't see that every day. Single piece "storm shutters" over the plexiglass (I was wrong, they're not real glass) windows, instead of the individual outer shutters. They'll have to be replaced from time to time, but they'll keep wind and rain from blowing the inner windows open. 'Couple of Amazon orders. Other crap I had laying around. But, without further ado, Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you... Château Débrix! I decided to go with the original period furnishings. (That chair is amazingly comfortable. Who woulda thought?) I hope the original builder, be he living or dead, not be too pissed. I did what I could to keep it usable and appreciated. Tomorrow it will be placed "in the field". And...nothing but "store-bought" for me from here on out.
