Finished cutting, splitting and stacking firewood for the year this weekend. Currently have 24 cord cut, split and stacked or about 2 years worth. That is typically what i try to have on hand at the start of every fall. The extra years worth is buffer against unforeseen events. Mostly hard maple, white oak and a smattering of black cherry and yellow birch. All my firewood comes from the sides of my driveway which is just over a mile long and is all thick bush either side. Just keeping the driveway open with a ten foot buffer on either side provides all the wood i will ever need and it is still unfailing that at least twice a year a big old tree will come down and block it for a day or two.

Looking good, Sir! Due to the Great Deep Freeze we had her in Texas last year, I cleaned out my entire pile and reserves. Have quite a few logs from fallen trees that I have piled up ready to cut to length and split but the 90-100 degree weather has been holding me back.

Wow! That's a lot of firewood. That much would last you about 75 lifetimes down here in south texas! lol
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

How are you splitting it? About 95 percent with a hydraulic splitter and the balance by hand. Hand splitting is because I don't own the splitter and there is always a small bit here and there that's not worth getting the splitter for.

That's a lot of wood. I do a fraction of that annually with my 2 young kids helping and it is a full days work for us. How many hands helped you with the back breaking work?

very nice! how hot does that yellow birch burn? I will put it in relative terms. White oak is noticeably hotter than hard maple. Hard maple is noticeably hotter than yellow birch. Yellow birch is noticeably hotter than black cherry and black cherry is about the same as American elm.

Man thats a lot of wood. I cut down 2 big mesquite trees and split a full 16 foot trailer load stacked to the rail and a little mound in the middle plus a little on a second trip, but it doesnt look close to that. I split it all with a maul, whooped my but lol. Ive got bbq wood for quite a while though.

Awesome. I was thinking about ordering some firewood this morning. I only use it in my old shop so a cord will last me all winter.

I love splitting wood with a maul. I have been doing it most of my life (I am 50) It is getting a little harder to split a bunch all at one time the older I get. We live on Ray Roberts, heat primarily with wood, and go through about 3 cords a winter for a 2500 sq ft house. During ice week with below zero temps last winter we went through 3/4 of a cord in a few days. I can see why you need 10-15 cords a year up there!
